The Philadelphia Phillies' history of futility is so complete and uniform throughout the life of the franchise that the loss of Jenkins and Sandberg wouldn't have made a dent in it. The only reason they seem to escape real scrutiny in discussions of futility is that their one and only World Series win occurred within recent memory. They, too, went 97 years without a title.

I remember the Cubs being the first team to 8000 wins. I think it happened in the late 70s or early 80s. Shocking how many wins the Giants have put on us since then.

shouldn't be too shocking considering the insane amount of terrible teams the Cubs have fielded over the last 30 years

How many do wins do Cubs have today?
9948 (9901 through 2006 plus 47 so far this year). They'd need to win 99 games in the regular season to reach 10,000 this year. Ain't gonna happen.

Just out of curiosity, where are these numbers from? The baseball reference site has different win totals. I never would have noticed this except that I was recently perusing all-time franchise wins at baseball reference, and noticed a discrepancy of almost 1000 wins for STL.

Fred's numbers go through the end of 2006. it's entirely possible that he didn't give the Cardinals credit for any of their wins in the past decade or so

B-R's #s update in-season, so the Cubs are up to 9947 right now. My guess on the St. Louis discrepancy is that it has something to do with the inclusion/exclusion of American Association wins tallied by St. Louis.

I know that, but they were still terrible for a few years after the Jenkins trade (not so much after the Sandberg trade; they were good by then). I didn't mean that they would have won more championships without those trades, but I'm sure they would have won more games and therefore taken longer to get to 10,000 losses.

The CUBS won their 8,000th game in 1982. The Giants won theirs in 1980.

Perhaps your memory didn't latch onto the phrase "in one city" when the CUBS were making a big deal out of that ??

The baseball-reference site shows the St. Louis franchise beginning in 1882, which is correct. But they didn't join the predecessor of what is now the National League until 1892. That should be the discrepency you noticed..... also, the Cincinnati franchise joined the league in 1876, but jumped to a different league in 1881, and then returned to the national league in 1890.... so there may be a discrepency there also. Any numbers I give you should be regular season W/L totals for teams in the National League and it's predecessor leagues, or the American League, as established in 1901.
