Baseball Prospectus Future Shock[/url]"]Chicago Cubs

Great Leap Forward: Catcher Geovany Soto has added power to his game, batting .341/.412/.584 at Triple-A Iowa; why he’s still at Triple-A when the big league team lacks a single big league catcher is a bit of a mystery.

Not What We Expected: After signed for a record draft deal, right-hander Jeff Samardzija has allowed 102 hits in 80 innings while striking out only 31. Top prospect Donald Veal has a 5.57 ERA at Double-A Tennessee, but at least he’s struck out 35 in 29 innings over his last six starts.

Open Questions: Will shortstop Ronny Cedeno (.383/.457/.611 at Triple-A Iowa) get another chance to fill the parent club's gaping hole at shortstop? Will injured 2005 first-round pick Mark Pawelek ever be ready for a full-season league?

Who Will Be No. 1?: With Felix Pie out of the picture, Veal has a shot at repeating if he can stay hot, but No. 3 overall pick Josh Vitters could be the choice once he signs.

Jose Ceda is back!! He's rehabbing in Mesa today and got the start. :D Hopefully Rafael Dolis isn't too far behind.

Darwin Barney (4th rounder from Oregon State) is in the Mesa lineup making his pro debut, batting second and playing SS.

Oswaldo Martinez threw 4 scoreless innings for Mesa with 5 Ks. Very interesting kid. He's short (MiLB.com has him at 6' but the Cubs media guide has him at 5'9") and he had mediocre numbers at the DSL last year (51.2 IP, 4.88 ERA, 32 K/11 BB, .280 BAA) but he's only 18 and he's been on fire in the AZL this season with a 4.50 ERA (most of which came from 2 bad outings) and 18 K/1 BB in 16 innings.

Looks like Andy McCormick was demoted to Mesa (after being demoted from Boise's rotation to Boise's pen a few weeks ago).

Woa, it looks like Darwin Barney wasn't the only guy making his pro debut - Tony Thomas (3rd rounder from FSU) also played in the Mesa game today. And he was playing at SS.

Wow. Timo Perez is on the roster.

Forget just being on the roster - he's batting third for the IL!!

They really need some sort of rule that prevents guys with X amount of major league at bats from being selected. That might not be fair to those guys, but from the standpoint of a viewer I'd prefer not to see the likes of Timo Perez.

Who's next.....Macias? ......Manny Alexander?

Samardzija's night is done: 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 K's/2 BB's. He will have a no decision as Michael Phelps gave up 2 runs in the 6th to give Lakeland the 4-2 lead over Daytona.

Samardzija has a 2.81 ERA in the second half (25.2 innings). Too bad he has 11 K to 12 BB in that time.

With Boise, it looks like Hempy is starting in place of Alburquerque who's moved to the pen. L-A-M-E.

But how was he credited with the WIN? Hempy started and pitched 3 innings, right? And Boise scored a run in the first and a run in the second.

You have to go 5 to qualify for the win, Hempy didn't.

Cal, could you expand a bit on your interest in Al Alb? Entering today's game, he had a 6.38 ERA on the year with a WHIP near 2, split over Peoria and Boise. He's a short little guy, RH at that, and my recall was that Nate described his velocity as average if that, high-80's to 90 or something was the impression I got. He's had years of arm trouble.

So I'd figured that a small guy, kinda old, doesn't throw hard, doesn't have good control, has had arm trouble, and isn't getting anybody out, that he's yesterday's news. Out with the old, let's take a look at somebody else.

But, you seem to be very interested in him and think he's got some potential. Is this still based on the super season he had 3-5 years ago in the DSL, before surgery? Or have you gotten some post-surgery reports to suggest that he's got something to work with that makes him a prospect?

Personally, I'd have thought Hempy is much more interesting. He's been an effective pitcher for South Carolina, and he's done that not too long after TJ surgery. He's a really big guy. Were he to recover a lot more velocity than he had this spring, which is not uncommon for tall guys or post-TJ guys, you might have a major-league arm. So I'm more interested to see Hempy having a good start tonight than AlAlb doing well in relief.

But, I do appreciate that AlAlb does have quite a few K's. So maybe he's got more to work with than I appreciated or recalled from Nate's writeup on him?
