ESPN and WSCR are both talking today about ARod opting out of his contract after this season. I can't find anything official. Is this confirmed?

Both are talking about him maybe signing with the Cubs next year because of his relationship with Lou.

I'm trying to find links so bear with me.

 If this is true, let the auction begin!

It's speculation I'm sure. There's no reason for him to announce that in the middle of the season. It only alienates him.

It'd be funny if Arod bought the Cubs and was a player/owner. Edited by Fro

But usually where there's smoke, there's fire, right?

I'm just shocked that I can't find a link anywhere, even if it's just speculation.

I read neyer's chat on espn at noon and he said that it would be 50/50 in his opinion that arod would re-sign with NY. That's basically some overpaid "expert" who doesn't have any idea, riding the fence. I have no idea why Arod would announce on all star day that he wasn't resigning. That would make for an awfully awkward second half in the bronx.

I heard Cowherd going on and on about A-Rod this morning, saying that if he opts out and doesn't stay with Yanks he will be playing SS at Wrigley next summer (subject to the situation with ownership, of course).

But I didn't hear him say if there was some news story that prompted him to discuss it.

I could see why he wants out, though. New York fans have treated him like crap even though none of the Yankees struggles can be pinned on him. He's become the undeserving scapegoat.

NY Daily Times

Some believe he's gone. One executive thinks he'll stay in New York. One GM mentioned Seattle as a sleeper candidate. The Yankees say they want him back, and A-Rod stands by what he said in March about staying, too.

But his agent, Scott Boras, has a reputation for convincing clients that the free-agent years are too valuable to ignore. Last winter, J.D. Drew, another Boras client, opted out of the $24 million left on his deal with the Dodgers to sign a five-year, $70-million pact with Boston.

"(Rodriguez) is going to opt out and he's going to get more," said Minnesota's Torii Hunter, a free agent himself after this season. "People want to say it's all about the money, but it's all about not being stupid."

One agent estimated that Rodriguez could get "$30 million per year or close, especially after the year he's having. He's not going to get an eight-year contract, though." Another agent and a GM estimated that Rodriguez would get seven or eight years, but not exceed the $27 million he's making this year.

J.C. Bradbury, a professor at Kennesaw State University and the author of "The Baseball Economist", said an average annual value of $30 million "isn't unreasonable."

"I don't envision him breaking $40 million, but somewhere in the mid-30s is probably his ceiling," Bradbury said.

There are perils to opting-out. Would Rodriguez get a reputation as a New York failure? Maybe, considering his brutal Octobers as a Yankee. He's never been on a team that has gone to the World Series, something some baseball people believe is not a coincidence. That could impact his marketability.

In spring training, Rodriguez said he wanted to stay, but didn't say he would not opt out. Asked Sunday if his stance had changed, he said, "Zero percent." Then he began walking away, saying, "We'll talk at the end of the year, man."

Here's what we might be talking about, complete with odds, on where A-Rod will land. Oh, and stay tuned next year, too. If he stays, there are scenarios in his contract based on whether he's the game's highest-paid player that would allow him to opt out in 2008 and 2009, also.

Sorry, I wanted to cut it down, but I had to post it all. All good info. I didnt copy the whole article, though.

How much estimated $$ do Cubs have left to spend?

It's been speculated all year that he would opt out. I'm sure the discussion you were hearing is just them assuming he will, which makes sense. Right now he's guaranteed 3/81. I'd speculate he could get 5/125 without even trying. I'm betting his contentious relationship with all things Yankee will mean he's gone. If the Yanks don't make a run this month, they should probably trade him. If they do, then I could see him signing an extension with his new team, that would presumably keep Texas on the hook for their portion of his current deal, roughly $27m. Then, his new team could throw 3/60-75 on the back end, and Alex would have 6/141-156 guaranteed, after this year, but his team would only be paying 6/114-129, with Texas maintaining its share.

In other words, ARod's best option for himself is probably to get traded (motive for rumors) and sign an extension with a new team, since Texas would then still be picking up part of the bill.

In all honesty, I can see a situation where Lou says "Look Alex, you have more money than you can ever spend in you life time now....with new ownership, we will pay you what we can, just come on in and lets get some things going here in Chicago. We will get you that ring."

Boras will have none of it I'm sure.

That's just hilarious to me. I'm sure all that productivity is really hampering the teams ability to win a World Series.

Yeah, his career postseason numbers are actually quite good(.280/.362/.485). He's just been really bad these last two years in the playoffs.

FWIW, the discussion on ESPN's 1st & Ten was that there is a believe that if he opts out, San Francisco is a possible destination for him. He really likes AT&T Park and the cove "reminds him of Miami".

I've been to both Miami and San Francisco and when I saw McCovey Cove, it didn't even remotely make me think of Miami.

The union might have something to say about that too.

Or he can just go play for the Marlins or Devil Rays.

Not when the smoke is coming from sports talk radio.

he'd probably cost more than all of their other players put together.

On BOTH teams.

Following the buzz about possible destinations if fun, but I'd be more interested if there were any scuttlebutt about what position he'd prefer to play. I wouldn't be surprised if he opts out to go to a franchise that only can pay him, but that will let him move back to SS. I have no insight as to which position he prefers more, but I'd be surprised if he didn't at least have a preference between the two.

Also, the talk from these sports radio guys that "don't count out the Cubs, provided their ownership situation is taken care of" is a total flake in my opinion. A new owner isn't going to pony up $85-100 mil for Zambrano and $125-160 mil for A-Rod, I don't care who it is. Especially not coming off a mediocre season, if in fact we hover at or just above .500 the rest of the way.

Maybe he sees that they aren't making the playoffs this year and wants to get traded now....the teams that he could possibly go to next year are all already in contention.
