OK, so I understand how this board as a whole doesnt attribute much value to a player's defensive ability, particularly with the Neifi run gloved in stat. But you have to acknowledge that Soriano has saved a number of runs with his arm this year. Beyond the putouts, you see plenty of 3rd base coaches holding runners at third on balls hit to left. I personally think this will bear itself out in wins down the stretch, especially in close games. I think this could make as much as a 2-3 game difference in the latter part of the season. I'm also not conviced that his arm is better served in right. Yes, it is a longer throw to 3rd, but the way he has deterred runners from taking 2nd and trying to score, I think his arm might be best utilized staying where it is. Considering the right handed balance of good hitters in the NL central, might he already be in the best spot for his defensive abilities? . Thoughts?

I think you mean RAI, runs armed in. This has nothing to do with his glove.

I don't have any 'stats' or information or any of that crap, but I assume that more baseballs are hit to LF than RF, so it would only make sense to a certain extent that his arm serves the defense better in LF at the moment. My only objection to him playing there is if Murt was up with the team and starting everyday, he appears to play LF much better than RF, so I would rather have him bump Sori to right in that situation unless he improves his defense in RF while at Iowa. But that's neither here nor there, because I don't see MM in the organization much longer. Your point appears to be valid, FWIW.

Sooner or later, Soriano is going to have to put that little "jump before the catch" on the shelf. That is a disaster waiting to happen, and I have even seen either Pie or Pagan do it once or twice too.

I'm willing to give Soriano a little slack on that. This is only his second year of being an OF in his life. If he feels the little hop helps his routine, I'm not going to be upset about it. The hop probably is instinct anyway-trying to train it out of him at his age will just cause him to start thinking too much out there and not letting his natural abilities take over. If the hop starts to make him drop several balls, then you revisit it, but right now it hasn't done any harm.

I don't think the "hop" is that big a deal, nor do I think it is a "habit he has to shake" like a hitch in the swing. I think Soriano is a pretty good defensive LFer, and just think that it is best to catch the ball with two hands when possible (he doesn't, most of the time), and not do things that increase the chance of screwing up a play.

I'll never forget watching Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson, and even Eric Davis make errors because of [expletive] little show-off nonsense they pulled before catching routine fly balls.
