PEORIA, IL— The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs announce today the resignation of hitting coach Kevin Green effective immediately. Green cited personal reasons as the explanation behind his resignation which came Friday in Kane County.

Former Chiefs manager and current Cubs Latin American Field Coordinator Julio Garcia will take over the duties as the Chiefs hitting coach beginning on Thursday July 12th when the Chiefs host the Swing of the Quad Cities at 6:30 pm. Garcia was a manager in the Midwest League from 2001-2005, four seasons with Lansing and the 2005 season in Peoria. He has served as a coach, manager in the Pirates, Devil Rays, Orioles and Cubs organizations since 1988.

Green was in his second season as a Cubs coach having served as the hitting coach with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League in 2006. The Chiefs organization wishes Green the best of luck in his future endeavors

Rocky Cherry got the start for Mesa (his second).

It also appears as though Clark Hardman (9th rounder from CSUF) is in the Mesa lineup. He is batting third and the box score claims he's catching (and also claims that catcher Carlos Perez is in CF)...score another one for the folks keeping score in AZL games.

Peoria is up 7-2 after 5 and C Welington Castillo hit his 5th home run of the season. His defense hasn't been pretty but as a 19 and 20-year old catcher in the MWL, Castillo is posting nearly a .700 OPS in what is basically his first playing time above Mesa.

Larry Suarez pitched 3 innings for Mesa - the first was a good, quick 1-2-3 inning. His control woes returned in his second inning with a walk and two wild pitches (with a triple in between) for two runs scored. He worked around two singles in his third inning of work. His final line: 3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 K/1 BB, 2 WP.

Peoria wins 7-5. Maestri gave up 2 runs in the 9th, but held on to preserve the win.

Mesa's box score hasn't updated for a while...it's been stuck at a 6-2 lead in the 6th for Mesa for quite some time now. Rea is 2/3 with 2 RBI's and a double. Carlos Perez is 2/2 with a triple and an RBI as well.

Crazy stuff going on. Its 'Silent Night'; that's a 'promotion'. People are there as librarians, tennis players and mimes.

Its quite eerie, to be honest.

Boise winning 7-3 after six innings of play.

Also, interesting fact to note: Catcher Mario Mercedes has been suspended for three games and fined $75 for his altercation the other night against Everett. I'm not sure of the exact time, but you can see the benches clear if you'll go here (http://www2.fiberpipe.net/hawks/2007/default.asp) and fast forward to about the fifth inning of Friday's game. Three Everett players were suspended.

Good. Only two were ejected even though three clearly punched Mercedes.

It's a good thing the whole thing was caught on video by the "Boise Fiber Pipe whatever it's called!"

DaytonaCubs.com"]Spears' Home Run Powers Cubs to 7-6 Win

Daytona Rides Long Ball to Game One Victory

By: Dan Watson

[VERO BEACH, FL] Nate Spears couldn't have picked a better time to hit his first home run of 2007. He also couldn't have hit it by a more narrow margin. Spears' three-run homer bounced off the top of the wall and then cleared it, giving Daytona a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh. Tim Layden slammed the door in the bottom of the inning to nail down the save in the first game of a doubleheader against the Vero Beach Devil Rays.

The Cubs hit four home runs in the game. Matt Matulia and Robinson Chirinos hit back-to-back solo shots in the top of the third and Brian Dopirak ripped another solo homer in the fourth.

Despite the Cubs' power surge, Vero Beach never trailed until the final frame as starter Jake McGee limited his mistakes. For the second time in a week, though, McGee received a no-decision while notching double-digit strikeouts against Daytona. The southpaw struck out 11 and walked just one in his six innings of work. McGee gave up three runs on four base hits. Three of those four hits were home runs.

The Devil Rays jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. B.J. Upton drew a two-out walk, and Shawn Riggans followed with a single. Sergio Pedroza stepped up with a three-run homer to center to give Vero Beach a three-run advantage.

The Cubs fought back in the top of the third as Matulia belted a home run to left, his first of the season. Chirinos launched one over the wall in left-center to make it back-to-back homers and cut the Vero Beach lead to 3-2.

Daytona tied it in the fourth on Dopirak's 11th home run of the season, another solo rocket.

Vero Beach retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hunter Vick started the frame with a double to the gap in left-center and moved to third when a pickoff attempt by starter Joel Santo was errant. A sacrifice fly by Neil Walton plated Vick to give Vero a 4-3 lead. After a strikeout, Santo yielded back-to-back two-out walks, and Shawn Riggans ripped a double to left-center to clear the bases and put the Devil Rays in front, 6-3.

The Cubs worked their four-run comeback in the seventh against reliever Greg Dupas. Alberto Garcia drew a leadoff walk. Then, Jesus Valdez bounced a potential double-play ball to short, but it was mishandled, allowing Garcia to motor to third and Valdez to reach at first. Two batters later, Alan Rick nailed a pinch-hit double off the wall in left-center, scoring Garcia and putting the tying run in scoring position. That set the stage for Spears' clutch home run.

It was the second time in a week in which Spears delivered a go-ahead hit against the Devil Rays. On July 2nd, Spears hit an RBI double to put the Cubs ahead, 1-0, in a game they would eventually win at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Ironically, it came against the Devil Rays' bullpen after a Jake McGee start.

Santo (7-4) now has the staff lead in wins for Daytona. The Cubs improved to 7-11 in the second half. Dupas (4-4) was saddled with the loss. Vero Beach, 4-13 in the second half, has lost 12 of its last 13.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Cubs Outslug D-Rays, 14-13, to Finish Doubleheader Sweep

Daytona Explodes for Another Comeback

By: Dan Watson

[VERO BEACH, FL] Down 5-0 after a full inning during the nightcap of Monday's doubleheader, the Daytona Cubs pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and turned the game into an offensive slugfest. When the dust settled, the Cubs scored 14 runs, pounded 17 hits and went through five opposing pitchers in a seven-inning game. The Cubs outlasted the Vero Beach Devil Rays, 14-13, to finish their first doubleheader sweep of the season.

Kyle Reynolds was one of many offensive stars for the Cubs, going 2-for-3 with two home runs. Reynolds drove in six runs and scored three times. Chris Amador went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.

Daytona starter Greg Reinhard, who shut out the Devil Rays in his last start (July 3rd), didn't make it out of the first inning. The Devil Rays tagged Reinhard for all five runs in the first on five base hits. The right-hander walked two and struck out one. During the first, Aaron Sisk and Rhyne Hughes belted back-to-back home runs, and Neil Walton finished the scoring with an RBI single.

The Cubs slashed into the lead with four runs in the top of the third. Brian Dopirak smashed a two-run double to cut the lead to 5-2, and Kyle Reynolds followed with a two-run homer to right as the Devil Rays' advantage shrunk to 5-4.

Vero Beach pushed two more runs across in the third, improving their lead to 7-4.

Daytona took the lead in the fourth, sending eleven men to the plate. Chris Amador's two-run double cut the advantage to 7-6. Alan Rick's RBI groundout tied the score, and a bases-loaded walk by Mark Reed staked Daytona to an 8-7 edge. Matt Matulia followed with a bloop, hustling double to plate a pair and the Cubs led, 10-7.

Vero Beach responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Sisk doubled down the left-field line and scored on an RBI single by Hughes. Then, Sergio Pedroza hit a screamer back up the middle, off pitcher Scott Taylor's glove and into a 1-6-4-3 double play.

Up 10-8 going into the fifth, the Cubs struck again. Amador and Dopirak singled to start the inning, and Reynolds belted the next pitch over the wall in right field for a three-run homer to give Daytona a 13-8 edge.

Vero Beach wasn't finished. In their half of the fifth, the Rays got back-to-back homers from Jackson Brennan and Sisk to cut the Cubs' lead to 13-11.

The Cubs scored another run in the sixth. Reynolds lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field for his sixth RBI of the night, blowing the Daytona lead back to three runs at 14-11.

Vero Beach reeled the Cubs back in during their half of the sixth. Reliever Darin Downs walked the leadoff man, and Matt Devins came up with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 14-13.

Scott Taylor picked up the victory in relief for Daytona to move his record to 4-9. Scott Koerber picked up his second save of the year. The Cubs improved to 8-11 in the second half. Matt Walker (2-7) took the loss for Vero Beach, who dropped to 4-14.

The Cubs will be back in action Wednesday as they start a four-game road series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Pina, Chiefs Sweep Kernels

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Peoria Chiefs capped a seven game road trip with a 6-run first inning and swept the Cedar Rapids Kernels with a 7-5 win. The Chiefs are five games over .500 for the first time all season at 12-7 and will start play on Thursday with at least a one game lead over Beloit .

For the third time in the three-game series, the Chiefs scored in the top of the first against Cedar Rapids . Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza walked Ryne Malone to start the game and Jim Adduci followed with a ground rule double to right-center. Josh Lansford singled to center as both Malone and Adduci scored for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. After a flyout, Blake Lalli singled to right and Derek Schermerhorn drove Lansford home for a 3-0 lead. Wellington Castillo reached on an error as Lalli scored and Schermerhorn came home on a sac fly from Nate Samson. Matt Camp capped the first inning scoring with a triple for rightcenter for a 6-0 Chiefs lead.

Staked to a big lead, Chiefs starter Jose Pina struck out two in the first inning and retired the Kernels in order in the second. Peoria then added to their lead against Mendoza in the top of the third. After a double play, Castillo crushed his 5th homer of the season, a solo shot into the pavilion in left field for a 7-0 Chiefs lead.

Cedar Rapids finally got to Chiefs starter Jose Pina in the fourth inning. Wil Ortiz reached on an error and Mark Trumbo singled to center. Brian Walker followed with a single to load the bases and Pina walked Julio Perez to force in a run. After a balk on Pina scored Trumbo to cut the lead to 7-2, the Chiefs righthander retired the next three batters to end the inning.

Cedar Rapids got another run in the sixth against the Chiefs bullpen. Michael Bartek got the first two batters out before Perez singled to left and went to third on a basehit by Josh Davies. A wild pitch from Bartek brought Perez home for a 7-3 score before Matt Maradeo come on and struck out Stantrel Smith to end the inning.

The Kernels made it interesting in the ninth when Anderson Rosario singled with two outs against Alex Maestri. PJ Phillips followed with a long two run homer to cut the Chiefs lead to 7-5. Maestri hit Wil Ortiz but got Trumbo to pop up and end the game.

Pina picked up his second win over his last three starts after allowing one earned run on four hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked one. Bartek gave up one unearned run over 2/3 of an inning while Maradeo retired all four batters he faced. Alex Maestri allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two in two innings.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Jose Pina (SP) – Pina allowed just one earned run over five innings of work to move to 2-1 on the second half. The right-hander lowered his ERA under 5.00 and stuck out four.
