If I had to guess, I'd say Billy Muldowney or Yusdel Tuerro will get the start for Mesa.

Mateo's start could be big for the Cubs. If he can start to show he's healthy by the trade deadline, that gives the Cubs an important chip that they can use when negotiating with other teams.

It will also be interesting to see if they have Angel throwing back-to-back days. With Dempster out for a longer period of time is Angel can come back healthy slide Marmol into the closer role and have Angel filled the fireman role where Marmol currently is pitching.

The other pitcher to watch for is Muldowney. He was a strikeout machine to begin the year. If he can regain that form, he might be able to move quickly through the system.

I have to think this is Mateo's last start at Peoria before he starts moving up the ranks.

I also read somewhere (can't remember where!) that Jose Ceda has started throwing in Mesa but he's still got a ways to go before he throws in a real Mesa game. Rafael Dolis is behind Ceda, so I guess that means he's not throwing yet.

yes, moving up or moving out. Mateo looked so much better the last time he pitched - not only were his pitches where they needed to be, he also showed endurance that he previously hadn't. There were at least 6 scouts in the stands watching Mateo the last time he started in Peoria.

Last time was supposed to be his last start...but he was highly inconsistent at Kane County on Tuesday so he is still with us. If he goes 6IP or 90 pitches today (which is the goal) then he will move on...otherwise he will stay...

I could have guaranteed that it wouldn't be Muldowney...(and no he isnt coming here...)

Wow, looks like he hasn't pitched in over 10 days. Must have had a set back in Mesa.

Even though he gave up 3 runs in that game, I thought he looked real good. Definitely had good command of his fastball and he got it up to 92 on a slow radar gun in Kane County. Hopefully he has a good start today.

My guess is that there is probably at least a 50/50 chance that Mateo is wearing another uniform next month. He has some major league experience, which other clubs like to see, but he probably isn't on Hendry's do not trade list. If there is a deal done, Mateo will probably be the pitching prospect included.

Iowa wins 9-7. Walrond was replaced after only 2 innings and 35 pitches after just giving up 3 hits and 1 ER. Prinz, Piggy, and Nannini were the relievers who gave up the other 6 runs. Both Richie and Nelson had two HR's and 3 RBI's. Murton had two doubles, an RBI, and a walk. EPatt was 2/5 with a double and a stolen base. Cedeno went 1/5 with his 5th SB of the year.

I wonder if Walrond got hurt; that seems like an awful short outing otherwise.

patterson grounded into a DP just before walrond was removed, and walrond was running from first to second on the play. I'm guessing that he got hurt somewhere during that play.

Maybe he pulled a hamstring or twisted an ankle or knee.

Yeah, there was an injury delay before Geoffrey Jones entered the game in the third inning.

ETA: IowaCubs.com says Walrond hurt his hamstring sliding - good call between you and Truffle.

For those of us worried about the Cardinals in the standings, Chris Carpenter made his second rehab start at high-A Palm Beach and it went well (and much better than his first start): 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 K/1 BB.
