I forgot how weird the Kane County schedules can be...on the day where everyone has the day off, they play at 6pm (granted, I'm sure they did fireworks) then today, once everyone's back at work, they play at noon. If it were "getaway" day, I'd get it, but that's not even the case - they don't play on Friday until 6:30. Very strange indeed. Guess it keeps all the fans on their toes :)

I've seen teams sometimes have a businessman's special daytime game during the middle of the week. I think Wednesday is the day that sometimes happens, but with Wednesday being a holiday this week maybe Kane County decided to move it back a day so they could have their fireworks after the game yesterday.

Could definitely be.

Chiefs are up 2-0 in bottom of 2 - sounds like 1/2 of the Cub minor league front office is there. Perhaps *that's* why they've got a day game!

Hehe. Marco Carrillo sounds like he's on - 4 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 6 K/1 BB.

Well, crap. No no-no for Marco today: 5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 6 K/1 BB.

What time do they play the games in Mesa? I saw on CNN that is supposed to be like 110F for the next week.

That would suck to catch in that weather.

Early morning (10 AM) in the first half of the season, then later in the evening (7 PM) for the second half of the season.

And yes, something tells me Josh Donaldson would be glad to move to Boise for the weather upgrade alone.

Amusingly enough, the game-time temperatures in Mesa so far have been only about 5-10 degrees warmer than Boise (upper 90s/low 100s for Mesa and low 90s for Boise).

fleita, wilken, and some others (but it's been a whole 9 hours and I forget who else!)

Huh. Perhaps they were scouting someone on Kane County?

Probably looking at the Chiefs more than anything else, especially Wilken. He was with the D-Cubs for a while last week and is just taking a tour of the Cubs minor league teams, I guess.

fleita was there at least 4 games of our last homestand too, so not sure. Perhaps they're trying to figure out who they'd be willing to sacrifice as part of a trade?

Also, Julio Garcia, the Latin America coordinator, coached 1st today. Forgot about that earlier.

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Snap Losing Streak With 9-2 Win

Coats was 3-for-4 and ties season high hit streak

By Andrea Breen / http://www.iowacubs.com

he Iowa Cubs hit four home runs to snap their eight game losing streak with a 9-2 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs Thursday night at Principal Park.

The Iowa Cubs took an early 3-1 lead with first inning home runs by Buck Coats and Matt Murton. Geovany Soto added a two-run homer, his 12th of the year, in the seventh inning, and Josh Kroeger added a pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning.

The Cubs had only six extra base hits in their last three games, but had five tonight.

Ronny Cedeno and Coats extended their hitting streaks to 13 games. They tie the season high streak set by Mike Fontenot (from May 2-20). Coats was 4-for-5 and a triple shy of the cycle.

In his first career start, Cory Bailey picked up the win, throwing five innings, allowing just two runs. New Orleans starter Philip Humber was charged with the loss.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Hart Deals and Smokies Slam Long Balls in 8-0 Win

Huntsville, AL- Hart Deals and Smokies Slam Long Balls in 8-0 Win

Tennessee jumped on Huntsville early and often Thursday on route to an 8-0 shutout win. Matt Craig drove in the first two Smokies runs with a first inning sacrifice fly and a third frame homerun.

Jake Fox cracked his 17th round tripper to grow the advantage to 3-0. Meanwhile, Kevin Hart gave up a flare single to the first batter of the game and did not allow another in his six inning start. He would walk only one with six strikeouts.

Tennessee blew the game wide open in the seventh as Jemel Spearman led the inning off with a solo homerun. Tyler Colvin then with two out sent his first homerun as a Smokie over the left-centerfield wall for a three-run shot.

Grant Johnson pitched the final three innings yielding only a hit and two walks for the games save.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Cubs Split Double Dip With Mets

Samardzija Earns Win in Game One; Offense Lacks Luster in Game Two

By: Matt Martinez

A rainout on Independence Day forced the streaking Daytona Cubs to play a doubleheader against St. Lucie on Thursday. Game one featured another standout performance by Jeff Samardzija as game two featured a fatigued offense that resulted in a split.

Samardzija earned his second victory in Thursday night's first installment as the right-hander lasted six strong innings where he allowed one earned run and scattered six base hits, walked two and struck out four en route to a 4-1 Daytona win. Tim Layden earned his seventh save as he sat down the Mets in convincing fashion to nail home the win.

Daytona trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning as Nate Spears laced a one out single to left field. Three batters later, Kyle Reynolds singled in the tying run to make the score, 1-1.

Robinson Chirinos singled home another run in the fourth as Daytona clung to a one run lead. But, in the fifth, insurance would come. And it would come by way of the long ball as Chris Amador and Reynolds would homer to extend the lead to 4-1. That would prove to be the final and Daytona would head to the locker room, winners of their last four.

Game two showed a different Daytona squad. Their offense was anemic as they only managed one run on two base hits.

Their one run showcased Amador's second home run of the day in the first inning as St. Lucie needed only to collect two runs to earn the win.

Jon Niese was electric for the Mets as he lasted five innings, struck out seven and walked none as he collected his seventh win of the season.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Win 7-3 Thursday

Geneva, IL – The Peoria Chiefs put up two multiple run innings on route to a 7-3 Thursday afternoon win over the Kane County Cougars. The win moves the Chiefs to 2-1 on a 7-game road trip and 9-6 on the half leaving them at worst in a first place Western Division tie.

The Chiefs took advantage of Kane County mistakes to take a 2-0 lead in the second. With one out Jim Adduci singled to right and Wellington Castillo followed with a single of his own. Cougars starter Scott Deal balked both runners up 90 feet. Brian Leclerc put the Chiefs on the board with a RBI groundout to short as Adduci scored. Ryne Malone followed with a 10 pitch at-bat and a grounder to first that was booted by Greg Dowling allowing Castillo to score for a 2-0 Chiefs lead.

Still leading 2-0 into the fifth, the Chiefs broke the game open and sent Deal to the sidelines. With Matt Camp on first and one out, Josh Lansford singled to center. Derek Schermerhorn, making his first Chiefs start drove home Camp with a basehit to left. Blake Lalli made it 4-0 when he drove home Lansford with Schermerhorn out trying to advance to third on the play. After an Adduci single, he and Lalli pulled off a double steal as Lalli scored and Adduci moved to third when the catcher’s throw bounced into center. An infield single by Castillo put runners on the corners and Brian Leclerc made it 6-0 with a RBI single up the middle.

Kane County ended Carrillo’s no-hit bid in the fifth when Alex Valdez led off with a double. Carrillo hadn’t allowed a runner past first base in 12 innings of work. He retired the next three batters to keep the shutout intact.

Peoria added to their lead in the sixth against reliever John Herrera. With one out Camp walked, stole second and moved to third on an error by Rosendo. Lansford hit a grounder to short and Camp scored when Rosendo dropped the throw home.

Kane County finally got on the board and knocked Carrillo from the game in the sixth. With one out Mike Massaro singled and moved to second on an error by Adduci. With two down, Carrillo walked Sean Doolittle. Greg Dowling got the Cougars on the board with a 3-run homer into the right field picnic deck, his team leading 8th of the season. The homer ended a 13 inning shutout streak for Carrillo and he was replaced by Casey Lambert.

Carrillo moves to 3-3 with the win. The Mexican native allowed three runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. He walked one and hit one while striking out a career high seven batters. Lambert, the Cubs 6th round pick this season, walked two and struck out one in 1 1/3 hitless innings. Alex Maestri threw a scoreless ninth as the Chiefs finished off the Cougars.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Marco Carrillo (SP) – Carrillo didn’t allow a hit until the 5th inning and made just one bad pitch on the afternoon while striking out a career high seven batters. He has won back to back starts allowing three runs on six hits over 13 innings.

BoiseHawks.com"]Donaldson Home Run Beats Sox

Josh Donaldson launched a two-out home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday night to beat the Everett Aqua Sox 8-7. Donaldson hit the first pitch he saw from Everett reliever Brandon McKerney over the left field fence. The win was the third in a row for the Hawks.

Steve Vento, making his first appearance for Boise, pitched two shutout innings for the win. Marquez Smith, keyed a five-run fourth inning for the Hawks with a bases loaded triple. Smith collected five RBI's on the night. Jonathan Wyatt had a perfect game at the plate collecting a pair of walks, a single, double and a triple, scored three runs, and made an outstanding catch in right center field in the first inning, robbing Everett's Joe Dunigan of an extra base hit.

The Hawks blew a 7-3 lead in the fifth inning, but after the game was tied, Chris Sigfried tossed two perfect innings to settle things down. Vento followed with his two shutout innings and Donaldson settled matters with his walk-off home run in the ninth. It was the third win in a row for the Hawks who moved into third place in the Eastern Division of the Northwest League.

dylan johnston has 9 errors already at boise? what a butcher.

From the 4 or so Boise games I've seen, his fielding has been ok (though he's gotten crossed up a few times and fielding errors that minor league SS just shouldn't). His throws are the worst, he tends to rush his throws and can get Rex Grossman happy feet.
