Good news for starters in Mesa. I guess the bad arm below avg throwing catcher from Auburn threw out his first baserunner trying to steal, maybe he's got a below average arm but its a good start, one would think!

Hopefully it'll be good news for Boise pitchers soon.

I'm sure he's going to be in Boise soon. His season at Auburn was done almost a month ago and its probably pretty smart on the Cubs end to let him get back on his feet again for a week or so and then on to Boise.

Yeah, that's what I figured was going on. I'm just impatient - the sooner Donaldson goes up the better.

Just to note Jeffrey Rea reported to Mesa today and should be getting in some games soon before heading to Boise too.

Probably the key plays of the Smokies game tonight:

Top of the 8th, Smokies down 3-0, 1 out:

Jorge Cortes triples (2) on a line drive to right fielder Ryan Bear.

With Gary Cates batting, John PurdomIII picks off Jorge Cortes at 3rd on throw to Grant Psomas.

Ouch.

Edit: It was 3-0, not 1-0. Still pretty ridiculous though.

Mateo's best outing yet: 4 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 K/3 BB. He needs to cut down on the walks.

Still, it's an improvement.

I hope Redmond is progressing well in AZ.

Hasn't gotten any innings yet, at least he's on the Mesa roster unlike Summers. Hopefully they (along with Kreier) are doing well in the sim games, I'd love to see them get in-game action but it seems unlikely as long as the older arms are around.

Another HR for Cedeno? Holy crap is he raking.

No kidding.

Over under on how long until he gets called up? One month?

I'll take under.

Murton after his 3 singles: .304/.407/.500/.907, 8 BB : 4 K (46 AB).

Dope went 3/4 today with 2 doubles and a homer. He raised his OPS about .050. Of course his OPS is only .759.

Andrew McCormick has been horrid for Boise so far (16.19 ERA) and Boise is on their way to another loss. At least they got that win yesterday...1-75 looks a whole lot better than 0-76.

Kyler Burke went 0/4 today and now is 0/11 with Boise. At least he has 3 BB to 1 K.

IowaCubs.com"]RedHawks Cruise to 10-5 Win

Iowa Drops First Two Games of Series

By Andrea Breen / http://www.iowacubs.com

Ronny Cedeno extended his hitting streak to six games, with his sixth home run of the season, as the Iowa Cubs fell to the Oklahoma RedHawks, 10-5, Thursday night at Principal Park.

The Cubs took an early 2-0 lead on Buck Coats' two-run home run, but the Oklahoma RedHawks scored five runs in the top of the third and never looked back.

Scott Moore added a home run for the Cubs while Eric Patterson and Matt Murton tallied three hits in the losing effort.

Iowa's starting pitcher Les Walrond was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs on nine hits over five innings.

Oklahoma's Mike Wood earned the win throwing seven innings and giving up three runs on seven hits.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]SEDDON AND FRIENDS BLANK TENNESSEE 3-0

Zebulon, NC- Chris Seddon had the magic touch on Thursday Night pitching six and one-third scoreless innings and depending on the shaky Carolina bullpen to get his first Southern League win since May 7th when he last beat the Smokies as a member of the Montgomery Bisciuts. He yielded four hits and no runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

Dante Brinkley snapped a scoreless game with a sixth inning solo homerun. Carolina would then get a seventh inning round-tripper from Lee Mitchell to build an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Chris Modley (S-3) pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Blue Jays' Big Eighth Inning Dooms Cubs, 7-5

Late Surge Spoils Dopirak's Big Night

By: Dan Watson

[DUNEDIN, FL] The Daytona Cubs battled back from deficits all night Thursday at Knology Park. In the end, the Dunedin Blue Jays put together another late push to hold off the Cubs, 7-5. Brian Dopirak, playing in his hometown, led the Cubs' offense with three extra-base hits and four RBIs.

The Blue Jays plated the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth for the second straight night. Jacob Butler and Cory Patton singled to start the inning, and Carlo Cota's two-run single put the Jays up for good, 7-5.

Brian Dopirak had one of his best games of the season in the loss, playing a part in all five Daytona runs. The Dunedin High School graduate went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Dunedin jumped on Daytona in the third inning. Reed Johnson, a Toronto Blue Jay on a rehab assignment, cranked a one-out solo homer to left-center to start the scoring. Two batters later, Josh Kreuzer drew a two-out walk. Kyle Phillips capitalized on the lapse in control by driving a double down the right-field line to score Kreuzer and put Dunedin ahead, 2-0.

Dunedin starter Orlando Trias was sharp early as he retired the first nine batters he faced. The Cubs ended that streak in the fourth when Matt Matulia drew a leadoff walk. Matulia moved to third on a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt, but wasn't driven in until a clutch hit from Brian Dopirak. The Dunedin native, who played high school baseball games at Knology Park, drilled a two-out, two-run homer to right-center to tie the game at 2-2.

The Blue Jays jumped right back on top in the sixth against Daytona lefty reliever Scott Koerber. Eric Nielsen started the frame with a bunt single and Jacob Butler followed by depositing an 0-1 pitch over the wall for a two-run homer to put Dunedin ahead, 4-2. Later in the inning, Jesus Gonzalez homered to left field to extend the lead to 5-2.

Daytona chased Trias from the mound in the seventh, but couldn't fully take advantage of a promising start. Dopirak and Rick began the inning with back-to-back doubles to cut the advantage to 5-3. With one out, Daryl Harang came in for Trias and shut down the side with Rick never moving from second.

Dopirak propelled the Cubs back into a tie game in the eighth to cap a two-out rally. Chris Amador and Kyle Reynolds drew back-to-back two-out walks, and the Blue Jays went to the bullpen to sidearming right-hander Connor Falkenbach. Dopirak stepped up with a shot over the center fielder's head for a two-run double, and the game was tied at 5-5.

Despite giving up the lead in the eighth, Falkenbach picked up the victory for Dunedin to move to 2-3 on the season. Mike Phelps took the loss in relief, dropping to 1-2.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Fall 8-3 Thursday

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped an 8-3 decision to the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the final game of four game series at O’Brien Field on Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 35-42 on the season and 4-4 in the second half.

The Chiefs jumped out to a first inning lead after Ryne Malone walked on four pitches against Timber Rattlers starter Steve Richard. Josh Lansford followed with a single to right that the right fielder misplayed and allowed Malone to score from first to make it 1-0.

Peoria loaded the bases in the second inning after Ryan Norwood singled and Blake Lalli walked. Brian Leclerc picked up his first hit in a Chiefs uniform with a bunt single. Matt Camp hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Norwood to make it 2-0.

Wisconsin tied the game in the fifth against Chiefs reliever Donny Walters. Calvin Beamon reached on a fielders’ choice and moved to second on a passed ball. Juan Diaz singled to right field which allowed Beamon to score from second and make it 2-1. The Chiefs defense committed two errors after two were out, one by Walters and another by Malone that allowed Wisconsin to tie the game 2-2. Walters continued to struggle in the inning. With the bases loaded he walked Alex Liddi on five pitches to put Wisconsin ahead 3-2. Miguel Cuevas came on in relief and retired James McOwen on one pitch to end the inning.

The Rattlers continued adding to their lead in the sixth inning against Cuevas. Beamon walked after two men were out and Diaz followed with a single. Reed Eastley drove a triple off the wall in right center to score both runners and make it 5-2. Cuevas could not get out of the inning after walking the bases loaded and walking in a run to make it 6-2. Jeremy Papelbon gave up a two run single to Joe White to extend the lead to 8-2.

The Chiefs started to climb back into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning against Keith Renaud. Matt Camp singled to start the inning. Jonathon Mota singled to right field to give the Chiefs runners at the corners with no outs. Malone lined a shot down into the right field corner to score Camp to make it 8-3 but Mota was thrown out trying to score from first.

Walters suffered the loss in 2/3 of an inning while allowing three unearned runs and walking three. Cuevas finished with three innings pitched and he allowed three hits and five runs. He also walked four batters. Papelbon worked 1 1/3 innings and allowed one hit while striking out one. Richard pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win for Wisconsin. He allowed two runs, one of which were earned while striking out six and walking two.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Juan Mateo (SP) – Juan pitched four innings, the most innings pitched in his four starts with the Chiefs. He did not allow a run while striking out three and also walked three.

Huge night for Dope.

I'm still rooting for him to come back and be a prospect again.

If he keeps up his post all-star break numbers, he has a chance.

.333/.356/.690/1.046. 4 HR, 10 RBI, 2 BB/11 K after the break in 42 AB.

However, the 11 K and 2 BB in 40+ AB make me think it could be hard for him to EVER be much of a prospect again. He's 23 and in A ball...for the 2nd time. I don't know how much time he has left.
