eyre pitched two scoreless and has been pretty solid lately (2.16 ERA in June).

this one is on lou.

Eyre is still horrible and does not belong on any Major League roster.

non-sequitor.

he pitched 2 scoreless, despite the fact that he's normally a short reliever. he shouldn't have been back out there.

Why put Eyre in for a third inning?

Honestly I don't blame Lou all that much. He was in a no-win situation in my opinion.

We have a 5-man bullpen. Marquis couldn't get through 6. All he had left entering the 9th was Ohman, Howry and Marmol who had all gone an inning the previous two days.

It was a 5-run lead and he wanted to avoid going to one of those guys for the 3rd straight day. Eyre had only thrown 21 pitches.

He brought Howry in with only the tying run on deck, so it wasn't like he had to be completely perfect.

I try to avoid completely criticizing a manager in this kind of situation, because we have no idea who is sore or has told Lou/Larry that they don't think they can go on the 3rd straight day.

I still think Eyre should be DFA, though I agree 3 innings was too much to expect from him so that's on Lou.

Lou's had some good things work out lately though. In particular, playing Pagan in CF today instead of Pie turned out very nicely.

Scott Eyre hadn't pitched in five days and had thrown 21 pitches before taking the mound in the bottom of the ninth.

I know relievers like Eyre aren't used to taking the mound the way he was used this evening.

But if you're working on five days rest and can't get the job done for 2.1 innings like Lou Piniella was hoping for out of Eyre, YOU'RE WORTHLESS!

I honestly think Scott Eyre has pitched his last ballgame for the Cubs. And that'd be OK with me.

I can't blame Piniella for this one.

I agree! And I hope it's his last game!

i find it really hard to believe that the cubs went into this game with marmol, ohman, and howry unavailable/not expected to be used. not even the cubs are so incompetent as to go into a game (w/ a crappy starter on the mound, nonetheless) with FOUR unavailable relievers.

Exactly. If those guys really were unavailable, the Cubs had a couple of choice. First make a roster move and bring up another pitcher. Second, go ahead and DL Dempster and bring up another pitcher.

Either way, expecting to finish a game started by Marquis with only Wuertz and Eyre was complete stupidity.

Leaving Eyre in for the ninth, regardless of the lead was dumbdumbdumbdumbdumb!

He's just terrible. He'll have a good outing here or there, and show signs of OKAYNESS, but he's not good, why keep him? Let him go. Please. I keep waiting for some great news like that to come out of Cub Central.
