Part of the reason Jocketty has to gamble on retreads so much is because the Cardinal farm system has been awful for a very long time.

To me, the big difference if we're talking Hendry/Jocketty is the people they surrounded themselves with. Jocketty put coaches in place to work best with the people he's aquired, Hendry put coaches in place that destroyed the fruits of the farm system they built. They've had their good trades(McGwire, Edmonds, Rolen, Lee, Ramirez, Barrett) and bad(Pierre, Mulder), but I'd be most interested in who Jocketty brought with him. Has he kept most of the same coaches and front office people throughout his stops as GM?

But isn't Jocketty responsible for how the farm system works? The Cardinals farm system has been atrocious for years, and he hasn't done much to fix the situation.

I agree with the rest of your sentiment though.

To an extent, but to his credit he's made changes(Luhnow is relatively new I believe), and that comment also served to illustrate that he probably wouldn't be forced to dumpster dive in a system with better talent and player development(like the Cubs).

Just to play a little devil's advocate (because I do like Walt Jocketty as a GM), don't the Cubs just have better talent because they suck and get high draft picks every year? So arguably there's less development necessary?

I wouldn't say so for a couple reasons. One, relating specifically to the Cubs, a large majority of their prospect successes have been international players(of note: the Cards don't really spend on Internationals, at least not like the Cubs), who require more development than any acquisition. Also, I don't think the teams' level of Major League success determines the level of talent in the system that much. For starters the Cubs and Cards haven't been that far apart record wise(in other words, the Cubs aren't the Pirates), and also when you look at the top systems(Arizona, both LA teams, Atlanta, Minnesota, etc.) you see several franchises that have had a lot of success, some of which has been sustained for several years.

In conclusion, I like parentheses.

This is Luhnow's third year. His first was the Rasmus/Anderson/Garcia draft (our top three prospects).

Gammons said on ESPN this morning that he wouldn't be surprised if both Jocketty and La Russa ended up in Cincinnati next year and that Walt is definitely feeling underappreciated in St. Louis.

If that happens, Im guessing Jose Oquendo is the new Cardinals manager.

I'm sure Duncan would love to work with Homer Bailey. Plus, it's not too bad having a staff with Harang.

Not everyone at ESPN agrees with Gammons.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz recently assessed the mood in Cardinals-land and wondered whether La Russa and general manager Walt Jocketty really want to stick around much longer. La Russa makes Dick Cheney look ebullient even in the best of times, so you can only imagine how much joie de vivre he spreads when his team is in the dumper.

Jocketty is signed through 2008 and is relatively underpaid at $1 million or so a year. While much has been made of owner Bill DeWitt's decision to put computer whiz Jeff Luhnow in charge of the scouting and development operation, the perception that he's an imminent threat to Jocketty is off base and hard to fathom for people in the baseball community.

"[Jocketty] is a World Series-winning general manager," a National League front-office man said. "Should he be looking over his shoulder at some Internet process guy?"

In the absence of certainty, you get speculation. La Russa's deal is up at the end of this season, and maybe he wakes up and decides that 12 years in St. Louis are enough.

One proposed scenario has Jocketty and La Russa going to Cincinnati in a package deal. That seems like a reach. Another has La Russa taking a hiatus, then coming full circle and landing in Chicago if Ozzie Guillen talks his way out of the White Sox job. That might be a bigger reach.
