Holliman vs the 2-3-4 in the top of the 7th:

Michael Brantley:

Strike 1 looking.

Fouled out of play (LF). 0-2 count.

Groundout, 4-1. Good job of Holliman to cover first base because Fox went for the ball.

One out.

Steve Sollmann:

Ball 1.

Strike 1 called, 1-1 count.

Strike 2 swinging (breaking ball), 1-2 count.

Strike 3 swinging!

Two outs.

Brendan Katin:

5-3 groundout. Three outs.

Mark Holliman throws a no-hitter! He is being mobbed by his teammates.

7 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 3 K/1 BB. The walk was to Adam Heether in the third inning.

And he was 1/2 with a 2-run HR.

Wow!

How common are these things in the minors?

I'm sure you regulars in this forum are going to laugh upon reading this, but... I didn't realize the games were only 7 innings.

They aren't usually. The minors go to 7 IP for each game when they are playing a doubleheader.

About as uncommon as in the majors! :D

Good for Mark! A no-no is an awesome achievement!

Ahh, Matt Avery (0-0, 2.89 ERA, 9.1 IP at AA) will be pitching for the Smokies in game two. It will be his first start since 2005. Edited by CaliforniaRaisin

...okay?

Where be the Don? :(

Not sure. But the Cubs have routinely used bullpen arms for game two of doubleheaders in Daytona this season, so hopefully that's all.

Gotta say it's strange that Avery would get a spot start over, say, Grant Johnson or Billy Petrick.

ETA: I fired an e-mail over to Mick, hopefully he responds.

Matt Avery isn't following it up with a no-no (or a shutout).

I just watched the Boise game on video - love how they have those for free. Some notes:

The two guys who really stood out at the plate were Dylan Johnston and Drew Rundle. Both went deep into counts every AB. He argued and nearly got tossed. On defense, he has poor footwork on his throws. Besides the throwing error, he had a few throws to first that were errant but the 1B made nice plays. The play that he missed fielding was a complete whiff on a weird-bouncing groundball - that play actually had two errors as the CF (Wyatt) overthrew third base after Johnston's miscue. Johnston has as many doubles as errors...what the hell.

Rundle went deep in the count on every AB - he fell behind 0-2 in his first two ABs and fought back nicely. On his second AB, he was robbed of an XBH by the right fielder on a nice diving catch. For a guy who had struck out in over half his AB going into tonight's game and had been batting 9th, I was really impressed with Rundle's patience and eye.

Huseby looked better than his line. His FB looked good and was sinking a lot. His curve was inconsistent - sometimes it had nice action and was fooling the hitters, at other times, it was a bit loopy and he didn't have control of it. The reason he only had 1 K was because he'd get ahead and to a 2-strike count but would miss with his curve until it got to a 3-2 count.

Lambert looked good, he's going to be the Jeremy Papelbon of this Boise team.

IowaCubs.com"]Pettyjohn leads Sounds past Cubs

June 22, 2007

Adam Pettyjohn pitched six solid innings and belted a solo homer to lead Nashville past visiting Iowa, 7-4, on Thursday.

Pettyjohn (3-1) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six and walking one to win his third straight start. Luther Hackman struck out two in a hitless ninth inning for his 11th save.

Pettyjohn's first homer of the year gave the Sounds (43-30) a 5-0 lead in the fifth. In five at-bats with Nashville, he's batting .400 with a 1.000 slugging percentage.

Joe Dillon went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his 13th, and Laynce Nix finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Sounds . Tony Gwynn and Chris Barnwell each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Cubs starter Ryan O'Malley (3-7) surrendered six runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts in five innings to raise his ERA to 7.29.

Micah Hoffpauir ripped a solo homer, his 14th, in the sixth and Eric Patterson slugged a two-run shot, his 10th, in the seventh for Iowa (41-31). --Zack Hample/MLB.com

SmokiesBaseball.com"]HOLLIMAN THROWS NO-HITTER!!!

Sevierville, TN – Tennessee Smokies pitcher Mark Holliman no-hit the Huntsville Stars in game 1 of a double-header at Smokies Park on Thursday night as the Smokies won 3-0. An appreciative, early arriving crowd cheered Holliman (7-5) as the last batter was retired, and greeting him with a standing ovation during the post-game celebration.

Holliman was dominating from start to finish in game 1 tonight, facing just one batter more than the minimum. His only blemish on the night was a leadoff walk to Adam Heether in the third inning. Holliman fanned three batters through seven innings to notch his seventh win of the season.

The no-hitter was the third ever in the history of Smokies Park since opening on April 20, 2000. Smokies pitcher Leo Estrella threw a six-inning no-hitter against the Orlando Rays on May 27, 2000. Orlando Rays pitcher Gerardo Garcia returned the favor to the Smokies on May 21, 2002, throwing a seven-inning no-hitter during a double header.

Sam Fuld got the Smokies offense going early tonight with a lead off home run off Stars pitcher Corey Thurman (2-4), his second of the season, to give the Smokies a 1-0 advantage in the 1st inning.

The rest of the game belonged to Holliman, as he mowed down the Stars batters one after another. For the game, Holliman threw 81 pitches, inducing twelve groundouts and six fly outs. To further help his cause, Holliman belted a two-run home run over the left field fence after a Jorge Cortes double to stake the Smokies to a 3-0 lead. He let his arm do the rest of the job. The entire Smokies team mobbed him after retiring Brenden Katin on a groundout to end the game, and tipped his cap to the fans during a post-game appreciative standing ovation.

In game 2 of the double header, the Smokies completed the sweep with an impressive 4-2 victory over Huntsville. Matt Avery got the spot start for the Smokies, and pitched well in his first start after a rough beginning. Avery went three innings, giving up two runs and walking three batters. Adalberto Mendez (2-4) came in for two innings of scoreless relief to get the win, and Jim Henderson notched his fifth save as a Smokie in his return appearance after a stint in AAA Iowa.

Huntsville jumped on Avery early in the 2nd game, plating two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Tennessee struck back in their half of the 1st inning with three runs of their own to regain the lead. The Smokies were aided by a couple of Stars errors in the inning, which helped score Jemel Spearman to get things going. The real damage was done by Issmael Salas with a two run single to score Casey McGehee and Jake Fox to stake the Smokies to at 3-2 lead.

Tennessee never looked back after the first inning, and plated another run in the bottom of the third to go up 4-2. All in all, the Smokies touched up Stars starter Steve Hammond (3-7) for four runs, only one of which was earned. Mendez and Henderson slammed the door on the Stars offense to help Tennessee improve to 3-1 in the 2nd half of the season.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Cubs Fall Short In First Game Of Second Half

It's All Up Hill From Here

By: Jeanine Jiannetti

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Daytona Cubs lose the first game of the second half to the Brevard County Manatees 6-2 Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Joel Santo (L, 4-4) allowed three earned runs on seven hits with a walk while striking out three in seven complete innings. The Cubs only scored one run before the the seventh inning to give Santo the loss.

Daytona’s first run came in the fourth inning from Jesus Valdez. Valdez (0-for-3) reached on a walk and moved station-to-station on consecutive base hits from Alberto Garcia (2-for-4) and Kyle Reynolds (1-for-3) and continued home on an RBI single from Jake Muyco (1-for-2).

The Cubs scored the second run when Kyle Reynolds advanced to second on a Jake Muyco sacrifice bunt. Reynolds then stole third, his fourth stolen base of the season, and crossed the plate on a Nate Spears (1-for-2) base hit.

Tim Layden allowed two runs and Chuck Platt gave up one in the final two innings to top off the Manatees with six runs on the night.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Out-Hit Beloit, Still Lose 2nd Half Opener

Beloit, WI – The same problems that plagued the Peoria Chiefs offense throughout the first half of the season contributed to their 3-1 loss against the Beloit Snappers to open the second half on Thursday night. The Chiefs didn’t get a hit with runners in scoring position, left the bases loaded early, bounced into a double play, and gave up a pair of homers to fall to 0-1 on the half.

The Snappers turned the bottom of the first into a nightmare start for the Chiefs and hurler Robert Hernandez. All-Star Brian Dinkleman led off the game with a long homer down the right field line, his seventh of the season. Catcher Wilson Ramos followed with a long solo homer of his own to left-center for a 2-0 Snappers lead. Hernandez recovered to retire the next three hitters and get out of the inning.

Peoria came right back in the second against Beloit starter Tyler Robertson. Alfred Joseph led off with a single and moved to second on an infield hit by Jim Adduci. Ryan Norwood drew a walk to load the bases and Wellington Castillo got the Chiefs on the board with a RBI fielders’ choice. Nate Samson reached on another fielders’ choice and Matt Camp walked to load the bases again with two outs. Robertson recovered to get Jonathon Mota on a grounder to end the inning with the Chiefs still trailing 2-1.

After the Chiefs failed to get runners home form scoring position in the sixth, Beloit added to their lead against reliever Marco Carrillo. With one out Carrillo walked Johnny Woodard before retiring Danny Valencia. Chris Parmelee, a first round pick in 2006, tripled Woodard home for a 3-1 Snappers lead.

Hernandez went five innings for the fifth time in his seven starts. After allowing the two solo homers the start the game he retired the next 10 batters he faced. Hernandez allowed just the two runs on three hits while striking out four. Carrillo allowed one run on one hit in his lone inning as he prepares for Sunday’s start. Jeremy Papelbon allowed just a walk in two hitless innings of relief.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Alfred Joseph (DH) – Joseph scored the Chiefs only run on the night and collected two singles in four at-bats.

BoiseHawks.com"]Volcanoes Hang on for Another Win

The Boise Hawks put together a late rally in the ninth inning but could not overcome a 5-0 deficit and fell to the Salem Keizer Volcanoes Thursday night 5-4. Danny Otero came in from the bullpen to extinguish the Hawks rally in the ninth inning and picked up his second save of the series. The Volcanoes scored two runs in the second inning with the help of two Boise errors. Lead of walks in the fourth and seventh innings also led to a pair of runs. Lead off hitter Shane Jordan hit a home run in the fifth inning and the Volcanoes had a 5-0 lead.

The Hawks worked their way back into the game late. They scored a run on a bases loaded balk in the seventh inning, but left two runners stranded in scoring position to end the inning. Against reliever Adam Paul in the ninth inning they scored three runs on four hits before Otero came in to put things to bed and secure the win.

Jose Made, making his first start of the season at second base, collected thee hits and a walk on the night. Shortstop Dylan Johnston continued his torrid hitting with three hits and a walk as well. Johnston is now nine for 13 in the three games.

Nice recap of the Holliman no-hitter.

Of note to me is this sentence: "The 6-footer, whose fastball barely touched the high 80s, finished strong."

The MiLB.com write-up has him topping out at 90, which sounds a bit better.
