Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins says he applied for the position of Cubs manager after Dusty Baker was fired last fall.

"I put my name out there," Jenkins said from his home in Anthem, Ariz. "They wanted individuals with previous managing experience. That just hasn't happened because I haven't been hired. When you think about it, if they don't give you a job, you can't earn another job."

Maybe Ferg should do what Ryno did and get his feet wet at a lower level first.

Might not be a bad idea. Fergie probably not all that willing to do what Ryno did at this stage of his life.

Interestingly enough -- there's another connection between Ryno and Jenkins. Both were fleeced from the Phillies very early in their careers. I guess we aren't the only ones who lose hall of fame players to other teams.

I'd want no part of Fergie as manager.

Or Sandberg, either, for that matter.

Eh, it's still way too early to close the book on Ryno. Yes, some of his baseball philosophies from years ago weren't anything we'd love, but years actually managing may change all that.

He's still pretty young. Who knows what his baseball philosophy will be five years from now.

I don't want to make it sound like I'm calling out Jenkins in particular, but it seems to me like lots of older ex-players like to think they should be handed major league coaching jobs with little to no coaching experience of their own. There's nothing wrong with throwing your name into the ring for consideration, but I've heard more than one comment from guys who seem to think they are above working with minor league teams to go up the ladder.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is/was notorious for this. (Obviously in a different sport). The sense of entitlement is a little shocking.
