When did Shappert get sent back to the Smokies?
Today, according to this press release from the Smokies' web site. At the same time, pitcher Greg Reinhard has been sent from Tennessee to Daytona.

Reinhard will be replacing Samardzija in the Daytona rotation, but I don't think it will be today because he threw 2 innings 2 days ago for Tennessee.

Some moves: Daytona 1B/OF Alberto Garcia was called up to AAA Iowa. LHP Chris Shaver is back on the DL.

Rain delay at Daytona, for now the game will be starting in 10 more minutes but they've already bumped the start time once.

Tenn and Birmingham tied at 3 in the 9th. Fuld with a solo HR.

Colvin is 1/3 with a solo HR and a K. Samardzija is pitching his first game in relief.

Petrick was good in relief for Tennessee and got the win.

Samardzija with 2 scoreless and hitless innings with a K. It's 1-1 in the 9th and Daytona is threatening.

Today makes it a full week since Patterson last saw time at second.

I wonder if he still has his infielder's glove or if he sold it on eBay.

Nice to hear about Samardzija. I wonder 2 things about his outing:

1) I wonder how much his velocity increased with the move to the pen

and

2) I wonder if they're continuing to make him throw all his pitches with the same percentage or if they are allowing him to throw more fastballs in relief.

Hopefully Cedeno told him to hold on to it.

It takes a mighty long time to have one shipped to Chicago if he needs it later.

Now that was funny-good work there.

Patterson should be able to play 2B the next few days with an infielder being called up from Iowa with the injury to Ramirez.

that's what I'm hoping... but God forbid he should make an error, he'll be banished to utility work forever

I'd have to imagine that his percentage of fastballs thrown will go up in relief, which might be just as bad as him throwing fewer innings.

I still can't think of any other reason for the move other than that the Cubs might be worried about his confidence or him souring a tad on baseball. But neither seems very likely, especially since football isn't really much of an option for him anymore.

Listening to the Daytona postgame show, Samardzija "reached back" and topped out at 98 mph. They're saying he was "dominant" and that he didn't show this the last few starts. The game announcers and postgame folks were suitably impressed.

I don't know if that's encouraging or discouraging. I do think that he has a greater future as a reliever than a starter, and he can become a pretty dominant reliever. I just wish they hadn't converted him yet-he could still develop into a starter if his secondary pitches would come around.

It's encouraging to see the velocity isn't gone and there are no injury concerns. He needs to start to get the innings and hopefully he gets back in the rotation soon.
