Eric Byrnes is probably headed out of Arizona, and he'd be a valuable center field addition who won't break the bank. He'll be 32 in '08, and on a reasonable three-year deal could be a better value than Ichiro, Torii, or Andruw. Wouldn't be surprised to see the White Sox get involved.

If the Cubs are not gonna play Murton, maybe they can package him in a deal for Byrnes. Sorinano, Pie, Byrnes is a pretty good outfield.

Why would you consider packaging Murton in a deal for Byrnes? If anything, they should get Byrnes plus others for Murton.

But isn't he an outfielder...we already have too many of them. I don't see the logic in this move, can you explain?

even without murton they already have too many outfielders. i'm sure they can find takers for murton and a team like the sox might be interested in jones but with pie the cubs have no need for byrnes. i say call up kroeger from aa and give him a shot in rf.

Well, hopefully Jones will be out ASAP. Obviously they should trade Murton if they are not gonna use him, and Byrnes could play RF and give them more SLG there, which the Cubs need.

Byrnes is what Murton will be if Matt doesn't improve. He's been around for a long time now, is in his 30's, makes millions, and has about 100 OPS+ for his career.

Agreed. I just dont see why they dont stick Murton in RF. They are not going to be able to afford a better option. Floyd and Jones are no future and Pagan is a 5th OF at best. I know a lot of people are down on Murton but he is the best option the Cubs have in RF in the future.

What trade option is going to be cheaper. The Cubs have a lot of payroll tied up for the next couple of years. They are not going to get a cheap replacement better than Murton without trading Z. Since this is not going to happen since Hendry is fighting for his job. The option that makes the most sense is to let Murton play right. Dont forget he had over a .800 OPS in his first full season of play. Pretty good for a first time player. I know he is no great shakes in Right, but its not like he has always played there. I know he doesnt have an arm but will improve his fielding.

I know you dont like Murton but there really isnt a better alternative unless we can get one for Z.

edit: I also predict if given fulltime play he will have a higher OPS than Soriano next season.

Murton is obviously NOT going to play on this team. He needs a home where they will let him play. He is just a square peg, and nothing is going to change with Soriano rooted in LF, and Pie in CF.

Matt Murton is not a RFer. I'd love to see him develop with the Cubs, because I think he is going to be a hitter - but he has a window, and time is slipping away.

He should be traded. As should Jones, who is terrible.

Keith Moreland wasnt a RFer either. I dont think he is going to be a good RFer but can be ok. No he will never have a great arm. The question though is who is going to play RF next year then? This team either has to resign Z or pay top dollar for another FA starting pitcher. This is also if both Marquis(a career first half pitcher) and Lily hold up.

Like I said before the only doable option would be to trade Zambrano for a good, cheap RFer and hope to get someone in FA to replace Z. Since Hendry is not going to do this, I think the best option is Murton. If he doesnt pan out its not like we wasted time thinking that Jones or Floyd are the future.

If they would take Jones plus a young arm for Byrnes, it would solve the Jones problem and Byrnes would leave at the end of the year saving us Jones 2008 salary.

Actually I do like Murton, quite a bit.

But as Abe explained quite well, his future (or lack thereof) with the Cubs is painfully clear. The writing's been on the wall for Murton since the moment Soriano signed last year.

Ideally I'd deal Murton (straight up or in a package) for his SS or C clone, or package him for an equally young/cheap/promising OF upgrade that's a true RF.
