so far the cubs have made 2 base running mistakes....barrett getting picked off 2nd and darosa getting thrown out at 3rd on a grounder to the SS....

i know the bullpen has been less than stellar, but i feel that the fundamental mistakes are more costly or at least as costly to the cubs than the implosion of the bullpen....i mean if you cant win the 1 run games, in addition to looking at the bullpen for blame, dont you have to look at the base running?? and i know there is plenty of blame to go around.......discuss

The players have to be accountable for this. These guys have played organized baseball since they were 5. You have to know the fundamentals of the game.

But I have never seen so much running into an out at 3rd before this year. Lou has to step up and get the point across instead of just looking lost in the dugout when something stupid with this team happens.

Lou's post game comment:

Cubs manager Lou Piniella is optimistic that the Cubs can get back in the race. They're trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by five games, but to get back in it, Piniella said one of the improvements they need to make is baserunning. "We do some things that make you shake your head, running the bases at times that gets you out of innings," Piniella said. "We are five games out of first place, and I know it has been a struggle, but what we need do is to get on a little bit of a streak, get ourselves back up to the .500 level and go from there. Nobody has given up. We're still working. The players are trying like (heck) to get the job done, they want to get it done. There is a lot of baseball left to play, but at the same time one of the things that we've been missing -- we got to get better at."

I'm wondering if the above is making the situation worse, that is, trying too hard can at times, exacerbate a bad situation.

I think it's time for Lou to really go off on someone or the whole team. This B.S. about "we're all trying" and "we have to do better" isn't working.

Enough being nice.
