Dylan Johnston was sent back to extended spring training and Ryne Malone is up with Peoria now that his rehab is over.

Where did you get this from?????

From a friend, I take it it's not true? My bad.

the Dylan part is not true....he should be back in the lineup tmw.

I see, I'll go yell at him. Malone is coming up though?

How has Shaver looked?

Im not at liberty to answer question 1.

Shaver looked good. threw a lot of strikes. Mixed speeds well.

Now the first run is unearned, per the Daytona broadcast.

Samardzija's 7th inning:

Samardzija vs. Hall (L):

Strike 1.

Ball 1 high.

HR to dead CF. 3-1 Vero Beach.

Samardzija vs. Devins ®:

Strike 1.

Ball 1.

Ball 2.

Fouled back, strike 2.

Called strike 3!

Samardzija vs. Walton ®:

Ground rule double to RF.

Samardzija comes out for LHP Scott Koerber.

Bah, after Koerber comes in, Walton steals third base and scores on a wild pitch.

As of now, Jeff's line: 6.1 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 9 H, 1 K/0 BB, 1 HR, 11 GO-6 FO, 89 pitches (56 strikes). The broadcasters think he deserves 2 ER but note that MiLB.com has him with 4 ER.

Daytona loses 5-1.

Peoria losing 1-0 in the 8th.

man, he really doesn't strike batters out. weird.

He's not missing many bats either, which is even more disconcerting. He must just be pounding the zone with sinkers and fastballs.

Where's this plus slider?

Where's this plus slider?

It only has had the potential to be a plus slider, and it's still a work-in-progress. It's disconcerting that it hasn't improved yet.

When he gets to 2 strikes, the batter just fouls off his pitches. The last few strike outs he has had have come from FB looking.

To all who ask "where is his plus slider" I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff isn't throwing this pitch. I know with the Cubs that they want pitchers to develop their change and curve. Sean is still not allowed to throw his slider. Just my opinion.....

Jeff said he was throwing his slider in a few blog entries on his web site.

The MiLB.com still says Samardzija gave up 4 ER - I agree with the Daytona announcers on this one, he should have only 2 ER and the other 2 should be unearned. Don't understand the scoring. Whatever, he still was too hittable.

Shouldn't it be 3 earned runs? I mean, the first error was Samardzija's.

No, it doesn't. If the person who reached on an error by the pitcher comes around to score, it's still an unearned run. I've always thought they should change that.

But this was an errant pickoff throw (granted there's a chance that the runner would score from second without the errant pickoff throw, but it was a pretty hard hit RBI single).

Well, usually in that case, the home team's scorer makes the call. I think it could really go either way. But if it was with 2 outs and the guy reached on a base hit and then advanced to 2nd on the error, I'd probably rule it an "unearned" run, simply because he would not have scored on a base hit if the errant throw did not happen.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies take series from Lookouts with 5-4 win

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies needed a win today win take the five-game series from Chattanooga, and got the help they needed from Jake Fox. His two home runs helped the Smokies win a close 5-4 game in front of 5,985 screaming children from the surrounding area. The Smokies improved to 20-18 on the season, and kept at least a share of first place in the North Division.

Fox kept up his torrid pace today by smashing a home run in the first and third innings. His home run in the third was hit to dead center field, about 420 feet, and gave the Smokies a 3-0 lead. Fox has now hit four home runs in three consecutive games, and eight on the season.

Sean Gallagher (5-2) pitched three scoreless innings to begin the game, and then ran into trouble in the 4th. A double to right field by the Lookouts pitcher Carlos Fisher (1-1) tied the game at 3-3. The Smokies came back to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Josh Kroeger RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Casey McGehee to give Tennessee a 5-3 lead.

After Chattanooga scored again in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4, manager Pat Listach decided to hand the game over to the bullpen. Billy Petrick came on to pitch two scoreless innings of relief, with Jim Henderson throwing a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save of the year. Henderson yielded one hit in the inning, but struck out the side to end the game.

The Smokies take to the road the rest of the week to face South Division leading Mississippi Braves in a five-game set. The Smokies will return home for five games against the Jacksonville Suns beginning on Wednesday May 23rd – Sunday May 27th.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Clean Sweep in Vero Puts Cubs in Three-Way Tie for Second

Cubs Can't Figure Out D-Rays in 5-1 Loss

By: Matt Martinez

[VERO BEACH, FL] On a night where the Cubs (20-18) were trying to salvage a single win in a three-game series with the Devil Rays (20-18), Daytona left eight men on base and hit an abysmal one-for-six with runners in scoring position on their way to a 5-1 loss in Vero.

Jeff Samardzija took the ball for the eighth time and yet again did not record his first win for Daytona. Samardzija looked to be on point as he only allowed one run in his first five innings of work. As his appearance wore on, Vero Beach manufactured runs and eventually touched Samardzija up to the tune of four earned in six and a third.

Daytona's lone run came in the top of the fifth as Alan Rick (who singled earlier in the inning) scored from second on a two out single off the the bat of Chris Amador. At the time, the score was knotted at 1-1, but Vero would score 4 unanswered as they cruised to the 5-1 final.

Jerry Blevins worked an impressive eighth, facing four batters while striking out two, as he dropped his ERA to an astonishing 0.38. Blevins has fanned 32 batters in only 23.2 innings this season.

Alan Rick was the lone Cub with multiple hits (both of which were singles) as Rick went two-for-three with a run scored and a walk.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Blanked By Snappers

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Beloit on Wednesday night at O’Brien Field. The loss drops the Chiefs to 20-17 on the season and 2.5 games back of now first place Beloit and Clinton who was idle tonight.

Chiefs starter Chris Shaver worked around one out doubles in each of the first two innings by Danny Valencia and Chris Parmelee to keep the game scoreless after an inning and a half.

The Chiefs threatened in the bottom of the first inning after Jim Adduci singled to right followed by an error by the shortstop Yancarlos Ortiz that made it first and second with one out. A wild pitch by Snappers starter Jeff Manship made it second and third but Yusuf Carter struck out and Josh Lansford grounded out to third to end the threat.

Beloit picked up back-to-back singles to start the fifth inning by Greg Yersich and Yancarlos Ortiz against Chiefs reliever Chuckie Platt. Brian Dinkleman moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt to give Beloit runners and second and third with one out. Platt got Joe Benson to hit a line drive to second baseman Matt Camp that turned into an inning ending double play.

The game remained scoreless into the sixth inning when Johnny Woodard connected on a solo home run to right field off Platt. The home run was the 21st allowed this season by the Chiefs staff.

Snappers starter Jeff Manship worked 7 2/3 innings and did not allow a run while picking up eight strikeouts. Rob Delaney picked up the final out of the eighth and sent the Chiefs down in order in the ninth to pick up his league high 11th save.

Chiefs starter Chris Shaver did not allow a run in four innings pitched in his first start of the year for Peoria. Chuckie Platt suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 2-1 on the season. Jeremy Papelbon worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings while racking up four strikeouts.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game- Jeremy Papelbon (LHP)- Jeremy worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief while picking up four strikeouts. He also worked out of a jam in the seventh with runners on first and second and just one out.

Notes… The Chiefs are now 4-14 when the opposing team scores first…Peoria is 7-8 at O’Brien Field this season…Matt Camp extended his hitting streak to a season high 10 games with a sixth inning single…Jim Adduci has now hit safely in three straight games…

Obviously I didnt see the game but having seen many with similar situations, here is my take on it...

With Jackson Brennan batting, throwing error by Jeff Samardzija on the pickoff attempt, Neil Walton to 2nd.

Jackson Brennan grounds out, pitcher Jeff Samardzija to first baseman Kyle Reynolds. Neil Walton to 3rd.

Hunter Vick singles on a line drive to center fielder Tyler Colvin. Neil Walton scores.

On the groundout, had there not been an error, Brennan would have gone to 2nd (an official scorer is NOT ALLOWED to assume a double play and you can only assume an out at 1st, not a FC out). Then it is in the scorer's judgement if the runner would have scored from 2nd on the single that happened by Vick. With 2 outs, and as long as it isnt a catcher running, it is a pretty safe assumption, especially at the A level when it takes a perfect throw and tag combo to get a guy at the plate. 98 % of the time, a run in this situation is going to be earned whether it is fair or not, it is an earned run based on the rules handed down by MLB on what you can and can't assume!
