all of our problems.

Send them Veal and say Marshall, package JJ to someone else for another prospect of their liking, just anything they want do it. Then ask for BJ Upton or Rocco Baldelli, both of whom [expletive] Law thinks may be available. Roccos playing poorly so we should buy low on him. Stick Upton or Baldelli in CF for the time being. Once Pie is ready he can take over RF. We'd have the best OF defense in baseball for you defensive lovers.

regardless rocco to the cubs would be too smart for jumbo jimbo hendry

so trade one of the top prospects for another outfielder? while it may not be a bad idea, i don't see how it solves all our problems. this team + rocco = still sucks.

well its dumping JJ for a real CF with plus defense. Rocco is the player that Pie can be. Hes still just 25 (!) and has present 25 HR power.

Giving up on Pie already?

What the heck has Rocco ever done that was so special? His numbers don't look like anything that Pie isn't capable of doing.

I don't see any big concerns of injury when it comes to Pie!

Just say no to more outfielders vieing for starting time.

I'd love to get a legit everyday man out there.

No kidding. Soriano probably needs name tags to identify who is he playing out there with on a daily basis.

If it was for Upton at SS, sign me up. However, seeing as he hasn't played SS since last year (and he was awful then) I don't think he's going back there anytime soon.

for one hes 25 so he hasnt peaked but hes shown 25 homer power and his a present 7.5+ WARP player.

PECOTA says more like 5 WARP.

That's in 120 games. You take his career numbers and average them out to a fullseason he's in the 7.25 range and to expect .25 improvement from a 25 year old isnt such a bad idea.

Rocco Baldelli is a DLee type breakout waiting to happen - or a Coco Crisp. Regardless i think what the OP is suggesting is a good idea and that is to get a solid young OF to build around. An OF of Soriano, Baldelli, Murton/Pie looks pretty solid. It also gives the option of trading high on Murton which, in this scenario, would be a good idea. Trading Murton at the deadline to a team for late season pitching help if we are in it and have Baldelli would be a good deal.

I doubt it would take as much as Veal to get Baldelli because Tampa has an OF logjam similar to ours. The trouble is that we would have to deal Jones first and Tampa does not want him. I would suggest the viable deal of Jones to Anaheim for Rodriguez and then deal Marmol/Marshall/Pen Arm for Baldelli.

Whatever Baldelli's value may be, Tampa probably thinks it is twice that. I would be nervous in how much we would give up to get any of their players.

You do nothing with Veal until you figure out what your doing with Zambrano. If they trade Carlos you need Veal.

It's not as if Veal is the only SP prospect in the upper minors, he's going to have to beat out Marmol, Marshall, Gallagher, Samardzija, maybe even Holliman. Not that he can't or won't, but Veal isn't a step above all of those guys, so I don't see the trepidation in dealing him, especially for a long-term solution on offense.

Dealing for Baldelli would make sense at the deadline only if the Cubs are still in contention, the Cubs can get someone to take Jones, and they trade Pie. Why trade for Baldelli when we have Pie for next year.

The only way something like this makes sense is if the Cubs are a few games out and the outfield situation still looks bad. In which case, you might trade for a true CF like Baldelli, deal Jones to ,well, anyone, and then trade Pie for someone else to help you win this year. Cabrera will probably be available, though the Cubs very likely wouldn't be able to resign him.

I can't imagine the Cubs getting Cabrera and then not being able to re-sign him. Can you imagine the uproar of getting someone like Cabrera, having him help you get into the playoffs, and then letting him walk?
