perhaps the cubs should consider trading guys like blanco, derosa & eyre and bringing up hill, fontenot & pignatello or rapada from iowa. this would help the cubs get a few more much needed left handed bats in the lineup. hopefully they would be able to find takers for jones & izturis too.

They love Blanco as a backup catcher with more natural defensive ability than Barrett, i.e, he can throw runners out. Similar argument with Izturis. DeRosa wouldn't be dealt so soon unless Hendry is willing to swallow his pride on what is a bad FA signing. Eyre ... can't imagine his value is too high right now, like J Jones.

Besides, it sounds like Pie is close to heading back down anyway. Not sure Lou is in agreement with injecting youth and, consequently, a less-experienced group of hitters for this mercurial offense we have.

OT - where in Aurora are you from? any chance you went to West High?

The others maybe, but why would Hendry have to swallow his pride over DeRosa? So far his start is even better than his season last year, and his contract is a bargain even if his OPS drops by 50-60 points over the course of the year.

Not disagreeing with the value, but I just don't see Hendry doing it this early in the season. Putting him out there so soon may signal to other GM's that Hendry's eager to deal DeRosa and Hendry wouldn't receive fair value. Unless he fits a need for another team, in which case Hendry wouldn't have to reach out to gather interest at all.

Why Koyie Hill and not Soto?

Has Prior been placed on the 60 day DL? That would open up a spot on the 40 man roster.

No, he's on the Iowa 15-day DL.

Why, exactly, are we in such dire need of left handed bats in the lineup?

i dont know. maybe because the cubs only have 1 left handed starter in jones or pie when murton plays (which he should be doing every day imo).

I'm not sure but Soto may be banged up. It seems from a casual look at the box scores like Hill has been doing more of the catching lately while Soto has been PH.

So? They need more hitters, not necessarily LH. There is no great need for LH hitters. If anything they need a RH bat that can platoon with Jones.

i disagree. have you ever heard stone's explanation on why it is important to have several left handed hitters in a lineup? he contends that if a righty only faces right handed hitters, the pitcher is able to easily establish a release point to the outside corner which makes him that much harder to hit. it also goes along with the left right left (or right left right) batting order sequence that some managers prefer. the staggered lineup makes it harder for a starter to get into a good rhythm on his pitches.

I've heard the theory, I just don't think it holds any water. The Cubs are much better against RHP than they are against LHP. And it's been that way for a few years, even though the rest of the league generally does better against LHP. They aren't in need of LH bats. They need bats. And if they need anything in particular, it is guys who hit well against LHP, which would mean a right handed bat.

Yeah, I remember now. Knew I had this conversation previously but thought it was on the Bulls RealGM forum.
