Given all of the hullabaloo in the recent past about the Cubs not being up front with injuries, I found this very interesting...

Toronto Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi revealed in a recent radio interview that the team wasn't up front about closer B.J. Ryan's injury during spring training.

Ricciardi, who made the comments to the Fan 590 after Toronto's 15-13 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night, said it wasn't a back injury that initially sidelined the pitcher in Florida, the Globe and Mail reported Saturday.

"It was his elbow that was bothering him," Ricciardi said during the interview. "So we said it was his back, so we could have a bit more time."

How does lying and saying it was his back instead of his elbow give him more time? More time for what? I don't understand.

Just a guess, but I'm betting that he was hoping that the elbow pain would be temporary, so he lied about it to explain Ryan's absence hoping that he'd get better and nobody would ever know. I suppose letting it known that your big closer acquisition from a year ago has elbow problems makes you look bad and might detract from the typical feel-good aura of a new season.

I can see why organizations might be conservative when it comes to communicating injuries to the public ("he's got minor elbow discomfort"), but outright lying about it? I don't see how that benefits you.
