he'll be running at some point.

The bunt?

Now is actually one of the few times it makes sense to do it. It increases the odds of scoring a single run, and the difference between a two run lead and a three run lead with one inning left to go is pretty huge.

it doesn't really matter what situation it comes in. a runner at first with no outs is worth more than one at second with one out.

it hampers the ability to score many runs while not aiding the scoring of a single run.

It does hamper the ability to score many runs, you are correct in that. But it does increase the odds of scoring that single run. Near the end of last season BP had up an expanded run expectancy matrix that illustrated that concept unequivocally.

how about a 1-2-3 ninth?

nah i'd rather give up a run and have the game end bases loaded. It adds to the drama and makes us appreciate the win even more. O, and it also increases the risk of heart disease.
