SmokiesBaseball.com"]Barons Shut Down Smokies in 5-0 Win Thursday Night

Kevin Hart pitched seven innings for Tennessee yielding just two runs on six hits and it wasn’t enough to get the win. He yielded a run in the third inning. Robert Valido was hit by a 3-2 pitch then with one out he moved to third on a Jason Bourgeois base hit. The run scored on a Chris Getz grounder to first.

The Barons added a second run in the fourth when Donny Lucy delivered a hit-and-run single to center.

Adam Russell cruised his entire stint on the mound. Russell yielded just three hits and walked two while fanning six over seven innings. Fernando Hernandez pitched the eighth and ninth for his first save of the season.

Thomas Collaro belted a three run homerun of Smokies reliever Paul Schappert to ice the game in the eighth.

Grand Slam by Colvin Rallies Cubs

Jeanine Jiannetti

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] It took a few innings for the Daytona Cubs (14-13) to turn on the gas, going five scoreless innings before taking the lead to beat the St. Lucie Mets (12-15) in front of a crowd of 4,083 on the first “Thirsty Thursday” of the season 5-4.

Mets starter, six-foot six-inch 220-pound 18-year-old right-hander Deolis Guerra (1-3) allowed only two hits in five scoreless innings. In the bottom of the fifth inning Alberto Garcia (2-3) lead off with a base hit. With two outs and Garcia on base, Guerra walked two batters to load the bases before being replaced. Mets reliever German Marte (BS,2) came in with ducks on the pond, on the first pitch, with just one swing of the bat, Tyler Colvin (1-3) belted a grand slam to turn the tables and put Daytona up 4-3.

With the base hit and two walks before the pitching change, Guerra was charged with three earned runs after leaving the game. With a quality effort, Guerra received the no decision.

The Cubs defense stepped it up again tonight with a few major plays. Daytona’s starter, right-hander Mitch Atkins (2-1) picked off Sean Henry at first base. While second baseman Nate Spears snagged a line drive out of the air that froze Mets’ Ryan Coultas and throw him out at first base before he had a chance to tag up.

St. Lucie rallied back with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, the Mets scored one run on an RBI double by Coultas to tie up the game at four.

In the bottom of the ninth the Cubs pulled together to collect their final run on a walk-off RBI single delivered off the bat of Mark Reed (1-4) to seal the deal for the Cubs 5-4.

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Chiefs put up five first inning runs and never looked back as they earned a series split with the South Bend Silver Hawks after a 6-3 victory Thursday night at O’Brien Field.

The Chiefs’ patience led to an offensive outburst in inning number one. South Bend starter Shane Dove walked the first three batters of the inning. After two straight batters were retired, Wellington Castillo ripped a two-run single to left to plate both Matt Camp and Jim Adduci. Yusuf Carter came up next and blooped a single to shallow left, just out of the reach of left fielder Joey Side, to score Alfred Joseph and Castillo. D.J. Lewis capped off a five-run first with a sharp single to center to score Carter and give the Chiefs a comfortable cushion after one.

The Silver Hawks finally got on the board in the fourth. After Yusuf Carter threw out Side at the plate, Gerrardo Parra scored on a fielding error by first baseman Russ Canzler. However, Peoria got that run right back in their hald of the fourth. With two outs and nobody on, Camp split the gap in left-center and came around to score on an Adduci RBI single to make it a 5-1 score. South Bend added single runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings. Shea McFeely notched an RBI single in the seventh and Parra did the same in the eighth.

Chiefs’ starter Jake Renshaw picked up the win. He went six innings and allowed just one unearned run on three hits, striking out four. Chuckie Platt went two innings and gave up two runs on four hits, and Oscar Bernard recorded a scoreless frame in the ninth for his first professional save. Dove lasted just two-third of an inning in recording his third loss of the season. He was charged with all five runs on three hits and walked three.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the game: Jake Renshaw (RHP) – The righty did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and earned his first victory of the season. He struck out four and did not allow a walk.

You were at the game?

Daytona News-Journal"]Everybody dreams -- bases loaded, you've gotta get this run in -- and when you get those situations you really want to take care of them and not let them pass you by," Colvin said. ""I love coming up in situations like that. I love having men on base. I want to be that guy who has to get it done. I put the pressure on myself and I love it when I come through like that. It makes me feel very good."

Colvin's second home run of the season gave the crowd of 4,083 something to cheer. The big Thirsty Thursday crowd had been waiting for a chance to make some noise. Until Colvin's home run, the Cubs hadn't scored and only managed two singles.

"Tyler likes to swing at that first pitch, too," Cubs manager Jody Davis said. "It was definitely a big blow because we had nothing going until then. Their starter just completely shut us down."

...

All it took was one pitch for Reed to rip a game-winning single to right field.

"To get the game-winner is a pretty unbelievable feeling," Reed said. "(Simmons) had to come after me with the bases loaded. That's what I went up there thinking. I was ready from the get-go. I got something up in the zone and just took a rip at it. It worked out."

It was a win that not only excited the fans, but the players on the field. The Cubs rushed the diamond to congratulate Reed.

"That was a good confidence builder for the whole club," Davis said. "It was a big emotional win for us. We got some big hits and we got (four) double plays when we needed them."

Did we get Kroeger as a minor-league free agent? He's doing really well so far this season, his .376/.404/.529/.934 line is really nice. I hope he can keep it up.

Claimed off waivers from Arizona Diamondbacks, 1/6/06 by Phillies, not sure how he got to the Cubs.
