Since 2001, Theriot has played SS in 103 games in Class A ball and 86 games at SS in Class AA ball. He has played 2B in 117 games at A ball and 86 games at AA ball.

My point simply is that moving a utility player with limited A and AA ball experience at SS to that position in the big leagues is not as easy as a lot of you guys are making it out to be.

There's just as much reason not to trust him at 2b as there is at SS given that he played basically the same amount of games at both positions. He was also a three year starter at LSU at SS, which isn't child's play. SEC SS's need to know what they are doing.

I realize SS is a more difficult position, but hell, look at this fielding percentage at SS compared to Cedeno's. .943(189 games: Theriot)>.905(293 games: Cedeno)

I always thought of Theriot as a Eckstein type player. Can he learn to adjust to his weaknessess at SS?

Crap, you just made me hate Theriot. Thanks.

I would just like to say that Fielding Percentage can be one of the most misleading statistics in baseball, mostly because it has no reflection AT ALL on range.

Enjoy the view from the bench, Izturis. Killing a rally with a bases-loaded double play was the last straw. He has to go.

Maybe we could trade him to SD for Maddux. Ugh, that deal still bugs me. I had no problems seeing Maddux go, but they didn't have to get that in return.

OK, Eckstein (sort of) and Young. Two out of 30. Any others?

What's your point?

Theriot isn't like Young or Eckstein. He isn't a second basemen by trade like they were, he's a SS who was put at 2b for whatever reason.

The last time I checked, the dimensions of the diamond are the same at every level of professional baseball, you're allowed to use the same equipment, and the baseball is made out of the same material. If a guy can play competent SS in the minors, he can do so in the big leagues.

I said it at the time...and I'll say it again...just giving Maddux away for nothing...just them paying the remainder of his salary last year...would have been preferable to izturis.

Theriot played 91 games at SS last season at AAA...to 32 at second base. He can play SS in the big leagues, but he's not as good defensively as Izturis or Cedeno.

I understand the desire to get Theriot and Derosa in the lineup at the same time but I still believe the fact that Soriano and RF du Jour aren't producing is a much bigger problem.

I agree, but you're terribly, terribly understating it. It would have been a better deal if we paid the remainder of Maddux's money and just didn't have to take Izturis, he is that counter-productive.

There is no use for Izturis to be starting. Throw teh "defense" agrument out the window, how in the hell are you helping your starting pitcher with this automatic 0-4 in the lineup every night?

He is an abomination, a disgrace. I loath his existence as a Chicago Cub. If I was GM he would be immedialy releaseed. Keep going out every night and getting your but kicked 4-0, 3-1, but its ok "cause he is slick with the glove". There is no reason any "sane" GM in baseball would carry him on a roster.

Not to mention, hitting into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded.

He can't even strike out. He always "puts the ball in play" . Utterly craptacular.

After his stellar debut as leadoff/SS, Theriot's career OBP is up to 39 and his OPS is right at 85. Leave him right where he is, Lou.

Theriot belongs in the starting lineup until he proves differently. He is hitting a ton and his spark seems to add to the total offense. His only mistakes this year have come from over-hustling.

This shouldn't be even up for debate, IMO. The only way Cesar should ever see the field is for a late game defensive replacement, and that is it.

Lou just said in his postgame that Theriot will be his shortstop.

I didn't quite take it that way. He said that Theriot did a nice job today. I didin't hear him say at any point that Ryan was the new everyday SS. That being said I wouldn't be surprised if he is in fact the new everyday SS. Which he should be IMO.

He may get a test run, of sorts, and Lou will make sure he produces. If he does, I see no reason why Lou wouldn't put him there everyday. Right now, Izzy is not getting the job done.
