Pie with 8 walks and only 3 strikeouts so far. That's very encouraging, and he's off to a great start. Hope he keeps it up.

Wow...Even making a concerted effort to take more pitches shouldn't yield that many walks in such a short time. Is the rest of the lineup that bad that they are pitching around him? Or is this just coincidence?

Corey was put on the bereavement list because his grandfather passed away, I imagine thats why EPatt isn't in the lineup as well.

2 for 3 with a BB, K, CS for Pie.

When does the lack of XBH become a concern?

It's always been a concern for me - the one year he put together a good amount of XBHs was the season he got hurt midway through.

But still, 32 ABs isn't enough to worry yet, imo.

Iowa takes first three from Express

The Iowa Cubs made it three wins in a row in their season opening eight game homestand at Principal Park with a 3-2 victory over the Round Rock Express on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Koyie Hill, the Cubs catcher broke a 2-2 tie by clubbing a line drive solo homerun onto the picnic deck leading off the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Cubs a 3-2 advantage.

Down 2-0 the Cubs evened the game at two in the bottom of the third inning. Angel Pagan walked and then Mike Fontenot doubled to put runners at second and third for Felix Pie, who brought home Pagan carrying the Cubs' first run with a clean single through the right side. Fontenot scored on an RBI groundout by Micah Hoffpauir. The Express built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings. In the first, Eric Bruntlett doubled and then came home on a double from Brooks Conrad.

However, Cubs starter Mathes settled down after the first few innings, retiring nine of the final ten hitters he faced. Iowa also received more good relief work from John Webb, Clay Rapada and Rocky Cherry who combined for three scoreless innings to finish the game. The Cubs bullpen has thrown 9.2 scoreless innings in the three games in this series against the Round Rock Express.

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped the first of a two game series with the Swing of the Quad Cities by a score of 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at O’Brien Field. The Chiefs have now dropped five straight games and are 3-5 on the season.

The Chiefs loaded the bases in the first inning following back-to-back singles by Josh Lansford and Russ Canzler but could not capitalize against Swing starter Brandon Dickson.

Peoria starter Jose Ceda worked out of a jam in the second inning after allowing runners to reach first and second with one out. In the third inning, the Swing got to Ceda with two outs when a Mark Shorey double plated two runs.

The Chiefs got a run back in the bottom of the third inning when Andrew Lopez connected on his first homerun of the season cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Quad Cities answered in the fourth inning with a five-run inning started by Christian Lopez’s RBI double that scored Daryl Jones. Ceda walked back-to-back hitters that loaded the bases for Isa Garcia who picked up an RBI single that scored Chris Grossman. Jayson Ruhlman relieved Ceda in the fifth and surrendered an RBI single to Brandon Buckman that extended the Swing lead to 7-1.

The Chiefs added a pair of runs in the sixth inning after Yusuf Carter reached base and stole second base with Alfred Joseph on third but the second basemen could not handle the throw and Joseph scored from third base. Wellington Castillo picked up an RBI single to score Carter making the score 7-3 in favor of Quad Cities.

After the Chiefs scored two in the bottom of the sixth Lopez picked up his second RBI of the game with a single off of Mark Pawelek in the seventh inning. Pawelek got Buckman, who leads the league in both home runs and RBI, to pop up with the bases loaded for a big second out in the inning to keep the score 9-3.

Ceda takes the loss allowing seven runs on four hits and four walks over four innings. Two of the Chiefs relievers, Jason Ruhlman and Rocky Roquet pitched without allowing any runs while Pawelek walked two and hit two to give up a pair of runs.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Josh Lansford (3B)- Josh finished the game 2-for-4 with two singles.

A Five Run Eighth Inning Gave Daytona the Edge

Jeanine Jiannetti

In Saturday night’s rubber match against the Jupiter Hammerheads (6-3), the Daytona Cubs (4-5) came from behind to win 7-6. The Cubs rallied back in the bottom of the eighth with five runs to overcome the Hammerheads.

The Hammerheads started off hot again with a lead off shot from Dante Brinkley (3-3) for the second night in a row. Brinkley homered again in the seventh inning to put Jupiter up 4-2.

Robinson Chirinos had an RBI single in the second inning scoring the first run for the Cubs. Tyler Colvin’s also had an RBI fielders choice in the sixth, scoring the only two runs for the team until the eighth inning.

The five runs in the eighth inning came from on five hits. The first six batters all reached base. Nate Spears, Jesus Valdez, Alan Rick and Jim Adduci all had RBI singles. Adduci’s single scored the go ahead run for the Cubs. Matt Matulia went two-for-two and reached base four times on the night in the Cubs victory over the Hammerheads.

Jon Mueller (1-0) recorded his first win in Daytona after being added to the team Saturday to replace the injured Michael Cooper. Matt Avery came in during the ninth inning and gave up a homerun with one out, but was able to regain control for his second save of the season.

Daytona News-Journal[/url]"]Shrewd moves rally Cubs

By SEAN KERNAN

DAYTONA BEACH -- When are five singles worth more than three home runs? Well, for the Daytona Cubs, the five singles they had in the eighth inning Sunday, along with two walks, translated into five runs, while each of the Jupiter Hammerheads' three home runs came with nobody on base.

The result was a 7-6 triumph for the Cubs over the Florida Marlins affiliate.

Daytona (5-5) made the most of its opportunities in the eighth inning, and manager Jody Davis made some critical moves to keep the Cubs on the attack in the five-run rally. Davis put Kyle Reynolds in as a pinch runner for first baseman Scott Norwood and played the odds by calling backup catcher Alan Rick, a left-handed batter, out of the bullpen to face right-hander Michael Doolittle (0-1).

"There was a lot of crap going on in my brain," Davis said afterward. "I'm out there thinking, 'Do I really want to take Norwood's defense out if it's a tie?' But luckily it worked out. (James) Adduci gets a bloop to left field, then Rick gets a bloop to right."

It was an interesting rally to say the least. Mark Reed walked and Matt Matulia singled to get things going. Nate Spears had an RBI single to center. Matulia advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Tyler Colvin and scored on a wild pitch. Norwood walked before Jesus Valdez's single to right plated Colvin, tying the score at 5, and advanced Norwood to third.

After Robinson Chirinos struck out, Adduci knocked a bloop RBI hit to left, and Rick hit a high fly to right that outfielder Dante Brinkley lost in the early night sky. The ball fell in for a hit and allowed Valdez to score.

"That's the kind of game we're going to have to play -- that and with our pitching and defense," Matulia said. "We do have a couple of guys who are going to hit some home runs, and a few of us are going to hit a few here and there, but really we have to execute our bunting game, our hit-and-run, we have to run the bases well, get walks, hit by pitches, situational hitting. And that's really what baseball's all about -- getting guys on, moving them over and getting them in."

Daytona went to the bullpen to start this game, calling on Jesse Estrada for a spot start. He was followed by Billy Petrick, Jon Mueller (1-0) and Matt Avery.

"Petrick threw the ball pretty well," Davis said. "All these guys are looking like they're settling down after the opening week. Even Avery, although he gave up a home run, had better velocity and location with his fastball and slider. I thought all our pitchers did a good job, especially with the wind blowing the way it was."

Petrick's outing was especially pleasing for the Cubs as he whiffed three batters and allowed two hits and a run in three innings.

"You come out with a win on a bullpen day -- that's pretty nice," Petrick said.

OF NOTE: Mueller was put on the roster Sunday to replace Michael Cooper, who has been sent back to extended spring training in Mesa, Ariz. Mueller had been with the Tennessee Smokies, the Cubs' Double-A affiliate. . . . The Cubs wore No. 42 decals on their helmets as a tribute to Jackie Robinson on Sunday, and fans attending the game received a commemorative program.
