If Lou wanted to change the complexion of the team's style of offense and do so, he'd have to improve the defense as well.

why? I could certainly see why he might want to, but I don't see why he'd "have to".

If you start taking out power to manufacture runs, there better be something else there that improves b/c that approach won't likely work under any conditions given the possible moves they could make.

If Pie wasn't the best defensive OF'er in their organization, I think it would be a poor move, but he would be significant upgrade over Soriano right now.

A Soriano, Floyd, and Jones defense is amazingly bad. A Pie, Soriano, Jones/Murton/Floyd is above avg. on defense. Over the course of the year, having Theriot over Izturis would help make up some of that diff. on offense at the expense of a throwing arm.

They can't start playing small-ball and expect to outscore them while having a terrible defense.

I don't want them to start playing small-ball, but if they did, they better bring some defense to that table.

Well if this team can't play in cold weather, we'd better do something before September rolls around.

Everyone buy gas-guzzling Hummers and support Big Oil.

The only way the Cubs will win the World Series is through global warming. We can do this!

lol so an "inconvenient truth" could be the key to the Cubs winning this year

But seriously, I don't get the criticism for Lou here. In the proper context, I see nothing wrong with his comments. Reporters kept baiting him; maybe he should have blown off the weather question entirely but he didn't use it as an excuse either.

Looking out the window today makes me wonder whether a little global warming is such a bad thing

I understand the spirit of Lou's comments -- they aren't as bad as Dusty at his worst. I think it was stupid to even go there though. Even if you can find a nugget of truth in there somewhere, it's just not a factor you ever want to lend legitimacy to. Teams should be expecting to go out and win every day, regardless of the conditions and regardless if it gives the other team an advantage. That's the mindset I want my manager to have.

Seriously, this is all being taken out of context. Comcast Sports Net showed the entire interview in yesterday's postgame show. The reporters were offering him excuses (probably hoping he'd latch on to one) for why the team isn't clicking offensively. He refused to accept an excuse but he did say that it isn't easy to play in 40 degree weather. He also flatly said that there was no excuse because both teams play in the same environment. He was visibly upset about the path the reporters were trying to take him down which is why he made it a point to clarify.

I see this as nothing more than some writers running with isolated quotes rather than giving the full context of the discussion and the followup.

Agreed.

The Chicago media really sucks.

*Edit* Except for you Bruce.

While in Chicago I had a newspaper that featured a "Who's hot" poll and was ripping on Michael for his lack of offense. Pretty early in the season for stuff like that.

Adam F Everett can hit a home run in this weather. Lee, Soriano, Ramirez, Floyd, Jones, Barrett, Murton can't???

At this point, I'd be happy to see Murton hit the ball out of the infield...
