Gallagher + Veal back to back = a reason for me to go to Zebulon, NC two nights in a row when the Smokies come to town (that is, if they're both still in AA at that time).

Good point. A 1-2 duo like that is a good reason for the league going to a 5 game series.

The Daytona News-Journal has a huge story on Jeff Samardzija as he prepares for his Daytona debut, complete with this picture:

Three to watch for the Cubs

Jeff Samardzija, pitcher

The Chicago Cubs didn't commit $10 million on the former Notre Dame two-sport star for nothing. And Samardzija, an All-America wide receiver for the Fighting Irish, didn't give up aspirations to play in the NFL just to toil in the minor leagues.

The 6-foot-5, 218-pound right-hander already has a big-league fastball and just needs some seasoning in the minors. His only drawback is his lack of experience pitching because of his two-sport status in college. The Cubs have faults, but this organization knows how to scout, sign and develop big-league pitching prospects.

Samardzija will be the next big thing for the Cubs' rotation.

Tyler Colvin, outfielder

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound outfielder is a five-tool player. Colvin has added about 20 pounds of muscle since the Cubs drafted him in the first round out of Clemson last year.

His first pro season in the rookie Northwest League he hit 11 homers, which tied for fourth in the league, and he tied for second with 53 RBIs. Colvin was selected as the league's player of the year by Baseball America.

Mitch Atkins, pitcher

The 21-year-old right-hander had a breakout season last year with the low Class-A Peoria Chiefs. Atkins led the Cubs' minor leagues with 13 wins and his 2.41 ERA in 25 starts was the second-lowest among the organization's full-season hurlers. He struck out 127 in 138 1/3 innings and walked 53 while earning Midwest League All-Star honors.

Atkins features a low-90s fastball, curveball and changeup. His strong season last year, coupled with a good spring, landed him Daytona's Opening Day start.

From Nate:

Appleton, WI – Due to extremely cold temperatures and blustery winds tonight’s scheduled Peoria Chiefs game at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers has been cancelled. The game will be made up as part of a double header on Sunday May 13th beginning at 1:05 PM.

Why, man, he doth bestride the narrow world

Like a Colossus, and we petty men

Walk under his huge legs and peep about

To find ourselves dishonourable graves.

The Daytona News-Journal will sell you prints of the photo.

Let's keep it going. Nice start for the top prospects.....Gallagher, Colvin, Pie. The group of SPs at AA and below are likely to make it tough on the hitters they face.

My prediction: Veal, Samardzija and Albuquerque will strike out a combined 20 men and give up 10 or few hits and less than 4 runs combined.

Alburquerque's game was postponed. :(

Yeah, that's right.

Huh. Apparently the Tennessee Vols game was supposed to be broadcast instead of the Smokies, but the Vols game was snowed out ... so we get The Don! after all.
