I was at the game tonight. Lilly looked really good. I was pretty impressed at his stuff. Considering the conditions - It was freaking cold and flurried snow on and off after the 3rd inning - Lilly threw a great game.

Our offense will come around a little more than tonight, but it was good to see a W and a decently pitched game.

Ryan Dempster pitched the ninth for his first save, completing a three-hitter. After he threw a first-pitch ball to Ken Griffey Jr., Piniella went out to the mound with some advice.

"I said it was 30 degrees and it was snowing, get the ball over the plate and you'll win a ballgame," Piniella said.

I love Lou. He showed more emotion tonight than that other toothpick sucking nitwit did in 4 years combined.

GO LOU!

I love Lou. But honestly Dusty DID show some emmotion the first couple of years. And had a real Gem when he threw his hat, threw the line-up card, and threw just about anything close to him while a'shoutin. And after that, He was "embarrassed" doing that infront of his son, and never did it again.

while it's entertaining to watch a manager have a meltdown on the field, it doesn't do much for the team. i'd rather lou not have a reason to throw a base or go after the closer physically. but dempster better throw strikes.

I don't disagree with you at all. Lou wasn't "physical" at all. But it was an emmotional type strict order. And players can respond to that. People can make of it all they want, but that type of passion for the game and passion for winning can really get the players to perform.

i don't think it has much effect on performance above the idea of getting dempster to stop screwing around and just throw strikes.

if you could yell someone into hitting a baseball, more managers would be doing it.

Demp: "...kay."

Lou cracked me up heading out to the mound tonight. I was thinking to myself, he isn't trying to boost his confidence here (on his way to the mound).

you can find um at the market

Four runs from our offense wasn't bad for conditions being as bad as they were. The ball simply wasn't traveling. I think our guys were swinging at too many bad pitches though. That Arroyo slider or whatever that thing is was fooling everyone.

Extremely happy with Lilly tonight though. I'm with you, I wasn't ready for that at all.

that pitch he kept throwing was insane, it had a huge break on it

it was nice seeing Lou going out there and telling dempster to get his $#% together, wouldve never happened with dusty

Yes. I'm actually impressed, that, considering our offense, we got 4 runs against a pretty dominating pitch like that. They say Arroyo got better when he switched leagues, but that pitch seems like it could be an even bigger reason. That pitch would be just as good in the AL. Last year we would never have gotten 4 runs against Arroyo, and that's a real indicator to me that they are a completely different and better offensive ballclub.

I dont know why so many people bagged on Lilly on his past ERA, etc.. look at the division he pitched in while in the AL! Same went for Arroyo.. I can honestly see Lilly copying Arroyo in becoming an outstanding NL pitcher.

Speaking of unexpected, after two games, DeRosa is the team leader in RBI, and Izturis and Lilly are tied for second. At this pace, DeRosa's going to drive in more than 160 runs, and the rest of the roster is going to be worthless!!

I actually expect Lilly to be better then "average" in the NL as well. He was a solid pitcher in the AL East and he should adjust well to the NL Central.

It will be interesting to see how well he pitches when he doesn't have his best stuff.

Very, very impressive. Love his mound presence, Works quick, and throws strikes. It's nice to see...

Arroyo is pretty nasty himself. The guy always looks like he's throwing a wiffle ball up there. I was surprised we scored 4 last night.

I hope this is the real Ted Lilly. The bits and pieces I'd seen of him prior to this year led me to believe he was better than his number indicated. The league switch just might do him wonders.

Going to be a fun year.

If he can win 15 in the AL East, I see no reason he can't win in the NL. It's interesting to see him and Hill pitch. Both have similar stuff, but Hill has the better fastball and Lilly (small sample I've seen) locates the curve a bit better. It'll be fun to watch these two pitch...

This is why I would kill to have the 2003 Mark Prior back, though. Imagine a four game series where you face Z, Lilly, Prior, and Hill, in that order. Get through that without your brain fried and you deserve a medal.
