Do you think at some point that Prior will be moved to a 5-day schedule? Seems he's been pitching every 6th day: If I recall, he got kicked by KC on a Saturday, pitched a minor league game on a Friday, pitched yesterday on Thursday, next outing on Wednesday. Coincidence? Or mght he just stick on a 6-day routine for a while?

just so everyone knows prior is set to start on wed. I think this start by him could determine whether or not he will be in the starting rotation. I hope he pitches really well. By the way, great game by the cubs today.

welcome to the board!

I guess they are being extra cautious. Eventually, he will have to get on a regular schedule if he pitches in the rotation.

"This turn around the rotation will be the most important for our pitchers," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Friday. "We look for our pitchers to throw about 100 pitches this juncture, starting with Zambrano today, then [Ted] Lilly, [Jason] Marquis and [Rich] Hill. The last time out, we'll shorten everybody up to 60, 65 pitches so they're fresh for the season."

I wonder if Z threw close to 100 pitches in his 6 innings?

The interesting question is: why would an extra off day benefit Prior?

All the research shows that for the majority of MLB pitchers, there's no discernible health or performance benefit from pitching on four days rest instead of three days rest. I'm sure the same would hold true for five days rest vs. four days rest.

Physically small guys like Pedro Martinez or older pitchers might be exceptions to the above.

A lot of managers, Dusty Baker included, seem to believe that giving a guy an extra day off after having him throw too many pitches in a start makes up for the high pitch count. In the earlier part of this decade, Boston used to give Pedro extra days off and then trot him out for 130+ pitches. That was stupid.

How'd Woody look today?

Don't know how he looked. There was no tv broadcast today, and the radio announcers didn't say much. He gave up one hit, but didn't give up any runs.

I'm sure you can add pitchers with a history of arm/shoulder/achilles injuries to the exception list. They are being overly cautious; there's no reason to rush, from the team's perspective, because they have other options. Lou has said as

much.

"He looked nice and comfortable and confident on the mound," Piniella said. "That's just one time. Let's see what happens here the next time. One thing that we've done with Mark, and I think it's really helped him, is that we haven't set any timetable, we haven't rushed him, we've given him all the time and it's working. Why all of a sudden go into rush mode and risk a setback? Let's see what happens next week."
