Prior's cavles are basically half the size that they used to be.

This has been said a million times, and it still doesn't prove anything.

Carrie Muskat agrees with you.

You'll like this. I was talking to Bruce Miles while we were watching Prior throw, and I casually mentioned, without making an accusation, the difference in the size of Prior's calves (remember "Calfzilla"?) when he first came up, compared to now -- they look almost sticklike. Guess who, standing right next to me, rolled her eyes and said, "Oh, come on!"?? That's right, Carrie Muskat. Draw your own conclusions.

Yeah, I read that. And Muskat's opinion, as always, means nothing.

Well I agree his calf size doesn't mean much, but doesn't it feel dirty to agree with Muskat? I just had to take a shower.

I'll give you that.

I would feel bad about agreeing with Muskat if anyone with a shred of credibilty had evidence to show he was using steriods. I'm not going to change my mind to make sure I disagree with Muskat though. I just consider her a non-entity; everything she says is basically meaningless.

Wasn't the story that Prior stopped working out his calves so much after his achilles problems?

Anyways, they're smaller, but they're not SMALL, as subjective as an evaluation as that may be.

When I think of a great player who had injuries and tried to come back and was never the same even when healthy enough to run again, my mind goes to Gale Sayers.
He actually came back fairly well in 1969 after his first knee injury, but when he was injured again in 1970 he wasn't able to come back at any level of effectiveness (he played in two games each in 1970 and 1971, with less than 100 yards total and less than 3 yards per carry each year). It would have been nice to see what he could have been if only he played 10 or 20 years or so later, with substantial improvements in knee surgery.

Randy Hundley is another player who was never the same after injuries.

How about Terrell Davis? MVP, Super Bowl MVP, 2000 yard season...ACL tear...never came close agina, retired 3 years later.

Please do not say shower, and muskat in the same sentence. Tnks.

Marquis...threw 86 pitches...

Prior... threw 68 pitches, 45 for strikes.

Prior threw four innings, fifty-nine pitches (only a little more than half of them, thirty-two, were strikes).

Marquis threw five, and looked very sharp -- 68 pitches, 45 strikes...

??

Also, Al says he got his pitch numbers from Bruce Miles. Maybe he or someone else can clear this up.

I mentioned that earlier. I just found a CBS Sportsline article that backs up Al. I wouldn't be surprised if Muskat mixed up some facts, but I'd still like to see if Bruce could explain this.

Wouldn't be surprised to see that Muskat messed up. She has the same pitch count for Prior as Al has for Marquis.

Yahoo Sports[/url]"]With most of the organization's decision-makers, along with the team physician, staring down from a perch behind home plate, Prior threw 59 pitches. Thirty-two were strikes or swung at.

His curveball was decent, better. His fastball, which Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild claimed ranged from 85-90 mph, with "a lot of 85s, 86s and 87s," was erratic, often well above the strike zone and, again, suggesting he was not finishing the pitch, for whatever reason. Once, Prior left the mound re-enacting his finish from the wrist down.

He insisted there was improvement.

"You know, just throwing it," he said. "Trusting that it'll do what it's supposed to do, not really worry about the results, what's going to happen after you throw it."

The fastball, in particular, he said, was "not bad."

I'm going with Al's numbers too but it's a strange discrepancy. If she had just flip-flopped their numbers it'd make sense, but where did 86 pitches for Marquis come from? Hopefully we can get a third set of numbers to confirm.

And that looks like it might be it.

CBS Sportsline also has that, as I mentioned a while ago on the last page...

I wasn't making any accusations. Prior's one of my favorite Cubs. But it is odd to see his calves (which used to be huge) so much smaller.

That is a picture from this spring, you want to retract that at all?

Ha. His calves are as big as my thighs.

Yeah, I saw Prior this spring myself and I thought his calves still looked huge. I don't understand how so many people are saying the exact opposite. I'll call it photo perspective, I suppose...

Steve Emtman is also fitting IMO, though he never really established himself as a solid pro player. He was highly coveted coming out of college, and showed flashes of talent before injuries washed him out of the league.

I'm confused.. wasnt Prior expected to pitch in AAA camp?

And what is Marquis doing in AA camp?

I think that they're starting to get the pitchers on track for the regular season.

He meant on what day they are going to pitch not the competition. By pitching today lines him up so that he will be on the proper rest to pitch the 3rd game of the year or whatever number he is going to be.
