According to the Sun-Times, Jones is going to get some time in CF beginning Monday when roster cuts begin.

Link.

Once the roster gets cut down by about a dozen players Monday, Piniella plans to start using right fielder Jacque Jones in center on days he rests Alfonso Soriano, he said.

Also, look for Cliff Floyd's debut on Monday as well.

Cliff Floyd (heel) is scheduled to play his first game of the spring Monday against the Giants in Scottsdale, as the starting left fielder.

That's all good news. The flexibility of having Soriano and Jones being able to play center could possibly help roster decisions, and having Floyd available and hopefully hitting well can only continue to strengthen the club.

It's worth a try but an OF of Murton, Jones, Floyd is kinda scary

Might be a good day to stick DeRosa in RF and let Theriot play 2nd.

And I think Jones gets ridden too hard on his defense. I think we will be pleasantly surprised how well he can play CF. I think Jones' ability to play CF makes Angel Pagan unnecessary.

I don't think most of us are worried about his defense (ie-covering the field, catching the ball, getting good reads, etc.) per se...more what he's going to do with the ball once he decides to throw it. I hope his "playing hurt" problem last year is something he can get over since the guy really has a decent arm.

Even before last season Jones had a reputation as a guy with poor fundamentals who threw the ball all over the field. Combining that with a dead arm was obviously a disaster and hopefully the arm has come back, but the defensive fundamentals will never change in a guy his age.

You mean beyond the fact that Pagan's complete lack of baseball talent makes him worthless?

I mean that if Jones could not play an adequate CF that Pagan's necessity, in the eyes of Cubs management, is more likely.

Jones ability to play CF allows the Cubs to focus more on another position of need for the bench. I'm scared that the last roster spot may end up going to either Perez or Pagan. I'd much rather see McGehee or Coats.

Pagan as a centerfielder is unnecessary anyway. If the plan is to give Soriano the go-ahead for center, then you'll only have a small handful of games that you'll need another centerfielder. In those games, we have Jones and Theriot. Jones plays a better center than either Soriano or Pagan have thusfar anyway. His issue has always been the erratic arm and last year coupling with it being hurt made it slightly less "erratic."

Pagan's place on the team would be purely speed and another bench bat from the right side. Position-wise, we'd rather have another middle infielder. But if we put the 25th man on the bench, we could obviously fill both. I'd rather we have a better RH bat than Pagan in that case though, giving the speed to the MI.

Given the choice between Pagan or Perez, I'd take Pagan. He's younger, and won't require bumping someone off the 40 man roster. Perez is a garbage player that shouldn't be in baseball. He's worse than Neifi Perez and right up there with Augie Ojeda and Jose Macias in the "how the heck do these guys end up on a ML roster" list.

Jose Macias............now there's a guy that played a heck of a centerfield

If Perez is chosen it's Pagan he'll be bumping from the 40-man.

I'd still prefer Pagan as he at least has some pop in his bat.
