I like this quote as well from the same article as the previous post:

"I'd like to see Samardzija face Barry Bonds one time," Piniella said. "No purpose -- but I think that would be exciting."

I do too Lou-I do too :D

Two rookies are opening eyes—right-hander Rocky Cherry and outfielder Buck Coats.

Cherry threw his fifth scoreless outing Sunday, and with Michael Wuertz and Roberto Novoa behind schedule, the 27-year-old Texan could wind up as the fourth right-hander in the bullpen. After Cherry's third spring save, Piniella confirmed Cherry was a candidate for the opening.

Coats, vying with Angel Pagan for the fifth outfielder spot, is hitting .458 with two outfield assists.

I would SO much rather have Coats than Pagan. He's a better hitter, and he could play MI positions in a pinch.

I'm not sure if Coats is being seriously considered or if Lou was simpling paying him a compliment about his ST performances. Pagan appears to have the advantage because he can play all of the OF positions and he is a switch hitter.

Recent reports indicate that Lou is again leaning towards carrying 12 pitchers. If that's the case, the chances are greater that only one utility INF and one utility OF will be selected. Buck is limited by being left handed and by playing, probably, LF in the MLs (I don't think they would seriously consider him for CF or the infield--because of Theriot ).

Very glad you're getting the time to see some of these games, Tim!

I had to take a week of vacation to do it, too!

Too bad I was too broke to make the trip to AZ that I was planning on. :(

Huh?

He merely listed pinch hitting opportunities as the last of three scenarios that would combine to get him 400 PAs.

The fact that you've been an avid proponent of trading Jones for nothing to ensure that Murton gets more playing time makes me wonder if you care more about Murton getting as many PAs as possible than the Cubs winning ballgames.

your last paragraph doesn't make any sense. if murton plays everyday, we'll win more ballgames, imo.

His slider is a good release point away from becoming his second plus pitch.

agreed. I can understand why Wilken had him rated so high.

Just heard on The Score that Clay Rapada was sent to AAA and Samardzija was sent to AA.

I'll put it here, too. You could have checked the front page of the site for more timely and accurate information. :D

Tim your notes in the minor league forum said Shark was sent to Daytona. Was he sent to high A or AA?

Is that a pitcher-friendly league?

Yes, but a bit less so than the SL.
