"I pictured Lou as being a guy who is constantly in your face," Barrett said. "When I first came over to play for Dusty, everybody talked about how fun he was to play for and how easy he was to play for, and the second day I played for Dusty, he was in my face. I wasn't quite prepared for that.

"In Lou's case, I'm overly prepared -- not that it's going to happen," Barrett said. "It's just like players -- managers get labeled."

Okay, he's trying to hold it in.

And my favorite

"Dusty is a lovable guy, and he's an intense, passionate guy about the game," Barrett said. "But in order for there to be change, there has to be an uncomfortable environment. What's important is that there's a higher level of uncomfortability -- if that's a word -- and that's what's going to allow for change for now."

=D>

I believe he is trying to hold in his explicitness so the media wont make a case out of it. But nice to see a former player of Dusty speak the truth.

Not sure what he was going for there. That's about as awkward a statement as there can possibly be. It's almost like he wants to criticize Dusty, but is trying so hard not to that he comes out with something that just sounds bizarre.

I think he was saying people were too comfortable under Dusty, and in order to have a winning team you need to have that "uncomfortability", or the sense that if you screw up, you're gone.

Or perhaps if you screw up, you are held accountable. Something Dusty and Co. did not believe in.

I get the feeling that if you feel comfortable with Lou, that is not necessarily a good thing. Meaning, you must continually improve/perform to stay in the lineup!

Does fear suit all players? I think its more of an individual thing. Some players perform better under pressure.. while other players perform better when they're laid back.

Great example of laid back is Kyle Farnsworth. Goes to the Tigers, great season. Goes to the Yankees, and blows.

You bring up a good point man. It is individual and thankfully we just get to criticize when it goes bad and praise when it turns out good. :) I don't think I would want the job of managing personalities and motivating players across a 162+ game season.

What he's saying is that when you go fishing, sometimes you use a bait and other times you use one of those new fangled fish agitators. When the fish get good and mad they might bite or else you go hungry, you know?

He also could have been trying to criticize some of his teammates. Maybe he thinks some of the other guys from last year were too comfortable under Dusty, took it for granted, and got complacent. With Lou, they know they have to keep their butt in gear, or they'll find his shoe up it. Or maybe he was trying to criticize both Dusty and some of the other Cubs.

Yeah, I think accountability is the word that would have made sense. Accountibility is something Dusty didn't seem to believe in or care about.

Look at it from your own perspective...do you or most workers perform better in their positions when they work under conditions where they are terrified before they even walk in the door in the morning? I think not.
