Ward hit .350/.438/.633/1.072 as a pinch hitter last year. That made him arguably the best pinch hitter in MLB. Cubs pinch hitters hit .216 last year.

Yeah, and Neifi hit .371/.400/.548 in 62 ABs for us in 2004. Isn't he considered the worst hitter in the majors now?

...... and speaking of non sequetors.........

I'm just saying small-sample stats like that don't prove anything, least of all a propensity for "clutchiness". Did Ward just decide to suck on the games he started?

Dan Fox's conclusion about pinch hitting in "clutch situations" in his column at Baseball Prospectus:

In the end, this is yet another confirmation of the Earl Weaver adage that when given the choice of populating the bench with an additional productive hitter or another (12th in the modern game) pitcher, go with the hitter. As a Cubs fan, this provides another small ray of hope. After several years of enduring a bench that couldn't hit their way out of a paper bag, Jim Hendry has added Daryle Ward to the roster, who had 22 pinch hits (four of them homers) in 2006 in 75 plate appearances.

Again, who would you rather have on the bench than Daryle Ward?

I have XM and listen to games as I fall asleep in the summer and the Padres guy is definitely the most annoying of any team. I almost refused to listen today when I knew the Padres had the broadcast.
