Game of Shadows is now in paperback with a new chapter. Heard this on Dan Patrick Show today and here is a quote from a Tom Verducci article on SI.com.

My favorite fact: the authors detail in their afterword the freakish growth of Bonds' body parts in his years with the Giants: from size 42 to a size 52 jersey; from size 10 1/2 to size 13 cleats; and from a size 7 1/8 to size 7 1/4 cap, even though he had taken to shaving his head.

"The changes in his foot and head size," they write, "were of special interest: medical experts said overuse of human growth hormone could cause an adult's extremities to begin growing, aping the symptoms of the glandular disorder acromegaly."

Or as the article points out, we've never seen anyone in sports accused of what Bonds is and not defend himself, either in public or in courts.

That is interesting. It would be even more interesting if I knew what "aping the symptoms of the glandular disorder acromegaly" meant.

I thought for sure a poster named Tarzan would know everything about aping.

:D

aping = mimicking

acromegaly is more commonly referred to as gigantism.

I guess that biology degree is paying off for me, eh. :roll:

No, people "fill out" as they get older. Bonds is simply "growing" and that is different. And I hope Selig doesn't acknowledge Bonds peruit of 755, and not show up for any games of Bonds, and I hope Selig keeps Bonds persuit from national tv.

I "think" I heard D. Patrick say Andre the Giant had this disorder.

Smarty pants. :)

It will probably never be definitively proven Bonds used steroids, but almost any sane person will conclude from the obvious body of evidence that he did use steroids of some kind.

Acromegaly isn't gigantism. They're the two disorders caused by overproduction (or, in this case, overuse) of growth hormone, but the key difference is whether the growth plates of the bones have fused yet. In the case of gigantism, the growth plates have not fused and the long bones can get longer (i.e. Robert Wadlow). In the case of acromegaly, the growth plates have fused, and you get a number of symptoms consistent with growth of non-long bones, such as spade-shaped hands and brow and jaw protrusion.

/spent wayyyyyyyy too long studying biology
