Anyone know why the barrels of Soriano's bats are all taped up?

Don't players do that because it leaves scuffs from the ball so they can see if they are making solid contact on it?

I was never really a ball player myself so I don't know for sure.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's to keep them from breaking, especially since at this point a lot of the hitting work would be tee stuff, soft toss, etc.(work on form rather than the result of the swing).

It serves 2 purposes:

1. to prevent flaking (ash).

2. to see where you are making contact with the ball.

I don't have much experience with maple, so I couldn't tell you if it flakes/cracks/whatever.

That picture looks like Lou just discovered some of Dusty's old lineup cards from last season. Yuck

Lou must be like me and have an unusually large head, that these "one size fits all" stretch-fit hats don't exactly fit right.

I can tell you that it looks like Soriano is using Louisville M9's, which are Maple bats.

I always thought that taping the barrel keeps bats from splitting. I like to use black bats because you can see the ball marks on the barrel to see if you are hitting mostly on the sweetspot.

You are correct.

I've seen fungo bats taped up so much they look like regular bats.

I think the lack of ST pics is because reporters were scared off last Spring Training.. Here's an example of the many travesties..
