Its just a freakin number, who cares?

Sosa, at least currently, is still playing. Teams don't usually retire numbers until a player has officially retired anyway.

I don't see the big deal.

how many people played with Ron Santos number after he retired?

I think at least half a dozen.

Did people cry when Mark Guthrie had the audacity to take Fergie Jenkins and Maddux's 31 ? (not directed at you, just sayin overall)

I love this argument! Somehow, the fact that Guthrie wore #31 makes it okay for Marquis to wear #21.

Marquis shouldn't be wearing Sammy's number. The Cubs shouldn't have made it available. I blame the Cubs.

I don't wish bad fortune on Marquis, but I wonder about his thought process in accepting the number. Does he not know it was Sammy's?

Sammy isint even out of baseball yet where as by the time guthrie wore 31, Jenkins was a hall of famer

It still disappoints me how everything collapsed between the Cubs and Sosa. Both sides screwed up, plain and simple.

Personally I see some of the hostility in this as though this is going to drive a wedge between any shot in the Cubs and Sosa ever getting together again on a mutual basis. It's as though with some that if the number is worn that it will be easier for the Cubs to never retire it someday.

I blame the Cubs more than Marquis. 21 is Marquis's number, and he's been wearing it a while. It was the Cubs' job if they so chose to tell him not to wear it.

This organization's refusal to recognize Sammy Sosa's contributions since October 2004 happened is absolutely nauseating to me.

Time will heal. Sammy brought a lot of things on himself with his petulant and selfish behavior.

Albert Pujols is petulant and selfish in many ways too, but I can't see STL ever allowing #5 to be issued again once he leaves the team, even if he leaves a meaningless game on the last day of the year early.

Pujols is a much better player than Sammy. Even at Sammy's peak he didn't approach Pujols' completeness as a hitter.

No doubt Pujols is way better than Sammy. But I'd say that Sammy has meant probably more to Cubs fans than Pujols to Cards fan.

Having not read the entire thread to this point, can someone provide a compelling argument for getting one's panties in a bunch over a jersey number? I wouldn't care if the Cubs signed Tonya Harding and put her in #14 as long as she wasn't batting 2nd.

I don't mind... when Sammy's jersey is retired, I will. Marquis is no longer a Card, he is a Cub. Sammy is no longer a Cub, he is a Ranger.

And this is what it all boils down to. WELL put. If Sosa has some problem with it, the situation is really pretty much the bed he made.

well the worse he does the quicker he's gone.

You're either with us or against us. That is a much better policy.

This is why all players should play in jocks and cleats ---- only.

I giggled.

Let me understand what your saying. Because Fergie was in the HOF it was a disgrace that Guthrie wore the number, but because Sammy is still an active player we can somehow forget what he meant to baseball, or to the Cubs? Sosa is an all-time great player, for any team. The fact the Cubs don't remember him as that is plain ridiculous.

Chris, I like ya man, but it's a freakin 4 page thread! It would take all of 3-4 minutes to read it all!

it would kick ass if Marquis did the heart-heart-kiss thing after every strikeout.

Eh, not so much. It's not like he's going to K that many.

how about if he K's Sosa in Texas :)

I wonder what the fans that bought #21 are going to wear to the game, will they continue to wear the 21's or something else?

Personally the number thing isn't that big of a deal to me. I'm not into numbers even being retired to be honest and I think way too many teams retire numbers of players that don't really deserve to have retired.

And put me down as rooting for Marquis to do well.

I saw Barret #5 after he switched, and saw Nomar #5 after he was gone. I think that anyone who has worn a Sosa for 2+ years without him will continue to do so.

I'm not happy about Marquis wearing #21, but I did want to jump in and say that there's a world of difference between hoping Jason Marquis sucks, and expecting Jason Marquis to suck.

Exactly. Expect the worst, hope for the best.

I do hope Marquis doesn't suck. I also hope that a million dollars will fall from the sky into my roof.
