[Rosenhaus] said the Bears had a seven-year, $33-million contract offer on the table for Lance Briggs last year, but haven't offered him a multi-year deal this offseason. It's either play the year at $7.2 million (poor guy), sit out (he'll never do that) or hope some team comes to the Bears (the Patriots?) and says, "We'll give you a low first-round pick for Briggs,'' and then signs him to a $7 million-a-year deal with $20 million guaranteed.

"The Bears haven't given us many options,'' Rosenhaus said. "Come in and play this year at $7.2 million. That's it. They've said to us they have no intention of signing him to a long-term deal. If we'd have signed the deal they offered last year, Lance wouldn't have been among the top-15-paid linebackers in the league.'' I said, "The Patriots ought to send the 28th pick to Chicago for him. The Bears would have to take that, wouldn't they, rather than have a pissed-off player?'' Rosenhaus said: "From your lips to God's ears.''

Rosenhaus's relatively quiet stance on this matter makes me think he isn't all that comfortable with his leverage. I'd take the 28th pick for Briggs, maybe get them to throw in a 5th from 2008 (I love building up surplus picks for the future). With 3 picks between 28-37, the Bears should be able to get a quality LB, offensive lineman, and either an offensive playmaker of some sort or defensive back. I also think they should be able to trade down with one of those picks, get those first two needs, and then have multiple mid round options.

Archelta is as overrated as it gets.

Seriously.

He's definitely overpaid. But overrated? I've never heard him praised as anything more than a good player, so, unless there's some corner of the football world rating him as HOF worthy, then I'm not sure how he could be overrated.

Archuleta 'blew up' at the combine. His combine numbers were phenominal and he shot up the charts. That created a lot of 'buzz' around him. He didnt live up the 'buzz', thus it could be said he was overrated. Being the highest paid safety doesnt help alleviate the overrated label either. I think its a combination of these two things.

Onto the Bears. Isnt it actually a good thing other teams are looking at the Bears role players as FA acquistions and paying them good $. Heck i remember in the in late Ditka/Wanny/early Jauron days that not even the Bears FA starters were worth a look for other teams. Its good.

fwiw AA was at his best when he played under Lovie Smith in St. Louis. If the price is right it would be a great aquisition for the Bears and give them more flexibiity at draft time. Michael Griffin is the only saftey worth one of our top 2 picks(well Landry and Nelson too but that is a not a reality) If Griffin is off the board for the Bears then safety is agian a concern come the 07 season. But with AA, the Bears can focus on OLine or Linebacker with the first 2 picks.(They can still look at safety as well)

My board would look like this(only including players that realistically could be around, and overall rank is in () )

OLB

(2)Rufus Alexander

(5)Paul Polusky

(6)Lawrence Timmons

(7)Jon Beason

S

(3)Michael Griffin

OT

(4)Joe Staley

(8)Aaron Sears

(9)Tony Ugoh

OG

(1) Justin Blalock

(7)Ben Grubbs

I don't think I could pass on Blalock and Guards tend to fall come draft time(not because of talent but teams rather fill skill positions high) I'm gonna get some flames on Poz > Rufus but IMO Rufus is a better pro prospect. I am liking Staley more everday(I'm sure the marketing brass is pushing for that pick  ) Out side of Blalock and Staley, none of the other OLineman stand out(meaning I'm not sure if one is head and shoulders above the other)

I would take archuleta for league minimum, but I was unnerved at how awful he was at open field tackling. For as explosive as he is, he is just awful. Even if he cannot cover(which seems to be an epidemic with a lot of the safeties around the league), He still needs to be able to be a factor in the running game. I have no doubt Lovie could get the best out of him, but I would never ever want them to give him anything substantial. Id rather have Chris Harris play

I'd rather find a young player with upside rather than pay for Archuleta's retirement.

Well, it's not like Archuleta is that old-pay for his retirement? If he can get back to what he was doing his first few years he could play another 7 years easily.

CCP, its not because of his age, its because he isnt an NFL player. He is, at best, one of the most intense personal trainers at your local ballys or a passionate special teams/strength conditioning coach at your local high school. He is not NFL worthy, he is awful, just awful.

EDIT: as of right now I mean.

I think you are over doing it here.

I'm pro signing AA if he is cut and is willing to take a reasonable deal. Saftey depth is a major concern and AA would be a solid addition to the saftey rotation.

Because he needs to be in the right system. And I'm pretty sure he can't be any worse than Danielle Manning. That was some of the worst safety play I have ever seen.

AA is a fine player. Bringing up his combine performance is quite strange, since he has been in the league for what, 6 years? He was a pretty good player in Stl. People need to stop taking anything that happens in washington seriously. Gibbs is a horrible coach.

They got him for a 6th rounder, and a 3/8 contract?

I really hope this doesn't mean they are cutting Brown. Arch, Brown, Manning and Harris could actually make up a pretty solid safety core.

I dont think they will cut him. They might ask him to restructure his contract, and Brown seems like the type that since he hasnt played much the last 2 years, he might feel like he owes them.

Nice pick up for the Bears. Archuleta was misused in Washington and should be more comfortable back in Lovie's defense. He's exactly the run stuffing safety they need, especially since the run defense turned soft after Mike Brown went down. I view Mike Brown in the same way I do Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, he simply cannot be counted on.

As far as Archuleta's struggles with the Redskins last year, I wouldn't put too much stock in it. That team is a mess and Snyder runs it like his own personal fantasy squad. I'm reminded of when the Redskins threw a lot of money at Jeremiah Trotter. He, too, struggled and was considered a bust and washed up. That was until he rejoined the Eagles, immediately helped turn their defense around, helped get them to the super bowl and made two pro bowls. I'll trust Lovie on this one.

the bears did restructure. from a 25 million contract to a 3 year 8 million with 5 million guaranteed.

not a fan of this but you all know that already
