Dolphins sign S Cameron Worrell to a 2 year deal.

No surprise that Cam is gone.

I too like Gonzalez, if they are to draft a WR he is on my short list. Meachem will be gone. I also like David Harris. Just because he is listed at MLB doesnt mean he couldnt play the SAM that Briggs plays. He's bigger and faster than Briggs. He could play the middle if urlacher is out.

Of course he would have to learn the new position so that is not in his favor.

I also like Harris, but from what I'm hearing he's not being rated all that high in the draft.

I think he'll slip to at least the 3rd round. nfldraftcountdown.com has him listed as a mid-round pick.

Edit: I really wonder if Lawrence Timmons will slip to that #37 pick we've got. That would be perfect for Briggs' replacement.

He wasnt as rated as high as he is now because of his recent combine. This draft was done before the combine and i dont think accurately projects what his value is now, running a 4.53 helped out a lot.

Lotsa good LB no doubt in this draft. Timmons would be a fantastic pick if he slips.

I don't see Timmons making it that far, but that would be a no-brainer at 31, not to mention 37.

Really? I'd like to see Angelo avoid replacing Briggs with first-round money, especially since he's going to lose Briggs over money. As long as we're cutting a guy because we aren't going to pay him, it seems to make more sense to try to replace him with the same sort of high-value, low cost player.

If he starts slipping, the 2 pretty high picks makes it easier to trade up. Angelo has never been one to move up for a targetted player, though.

Also not be nitpicky

Just because he is listed at MLB doesnt mean he couldnt play the SAM that Briggs plays

Briggs actually plays the weak side which is where the play is supposed to flow to often in this scheme (like Derrick Brooks). Whoever comes in in all likelihood didn't play this type of defense in college and will be "learning a new position", so it really just comes down to if a player has the physical skills to play the position.

I said "no-brainer" because at 31, he would most likely be the best player available at that point.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh

Theres a poll on ESPN: "Are the Bears dismantling or building their NFC Championship team?"

80% said yes, 20% no. (At least the last I saw, I can't imagine its changed much)

Jerry Angelo is in a lose-lose situation. There is no way he can come out of this looking good. (At least to the apparently incredibly ignorant public)

Lets go over the 'losses' so far:

Ron Rivera, Thomas Jones....Cameron Worrell? Ian Scott (Maybe?!)

Ron Rivera is almost not like a loss at all. I don't think anyone really doubts that Bob Babich can come in and do just as well of a job. Apparently there was some personal tension between Lovie Smith and Ron. You know who wins that battle, the head coach. And yet, we still didn't fire him, we just failed to renew a contract that had ended. Unbelievable. If he was such a highly prized commodity why didn't he win at least a defensive coordinator spot?

Thomas Jones? A back who is already 28, and blocking the 4th overall pick? How many times has this happened in history, and how many times have teams been praised for settling a situation similar to it? By all stats, (DVOA, ypc, total yardage, catching, ) he never really was any better than an average back. The bizarre thing is how much love this guy gets the second he leaves. Where was all this praise during the season? All I heard were fans and journalists cursing his dancing and cut-backs in the backfield. ARGH.

I also think that ESPN is somehow implying the Lance Briggs situation is the Bears' front office's fault. They are trying their best to keep him at least one more year and they are trying to dismantle the team? They could have very easily just let him go to free agency, BUT THEY ARE TRYING TO KEEP HIM AND THAT IS WHAT IS STARTING ALL THE CONTROVERSY! ARGH

At the moment the Bears are primed to keep 21 of 22 starters from the 2006 team. Thats unbelievable.

Don't worry, Angelo will have won come playoff time next season (and I agree with the rest of your post).

Theres also the chance that Angelo can improve the team and it still fails to do better in the postseason. This has happened often in the past, and considering our schedule, its very likely.

Its also very conceivable that the team improves and doesn't win 13 games. Anything can happen in the playoffs, too. Results are typically a great indicator, but I get the feeling if the Bears don't repeat at least last year's success Angelo may get harshly criticized no matter what.

I see the Jones/Benson situation as similar to the Brees/Rivers situation in SD. Except that SD had more invested in Rivers and that Brees was a much bigger loss than Thomas Jones. San Diego improved without getting anything for Brees. The Bears will be similar and they get to move up 26 picks in the draft.

Todd Johnson is a Ram. He signed a four year deal. First Cam Worrell, now Todd Johnson. The bear lose any more safeties, they are going to have to bring John Mangum out of retirement.

Or Markus Paul. WOOT!

Except that many teams, including the Bears, went to a 2-back system this year. If the Bears feel confident that Benson can handle a full workload, or that Peterson/random pickup can spell Benson enough to keep him fresh for 16 games, getting the draft picks was worth losing Jones.

Compton Dominguez HS cornerback Aaron Hester - Devin's cousin - commits to UCLA! :)

I'm guessing he's really, really fast. If not for the fact that he's Devin Hester's cousing.....at least for the fact that he is from Compton.

Why is it the Bears are not linked to any free agent? Not even the B, C, and D-tier guys? I don't understand. I know they were supposedly behind trying to get Lovie and Jerry's deals done, but to not even be mentioned with anyone looking for a new team?

I dont remember hearing anything 'linked' to him but ESPN projected DT Anthony Adams of San Fran to the Bears. Thats the only thing ive seen.
