For the Cubs: Eric Patterson

Yeah, he did well in the Midwest League, but he was old for that league. And while I know his AA stats should be judged in terms of the Southern League, they were still mediocre at best. Too many strikeouts, not enough walks, poor defense...overall I'm not as convinced as a lot of people that he's a future starter

For other teams: Carlos Gonzalez

30/104 K/BB ratio, although he did finally step up the power. To me, he's about equal to Felix Pie as a prospect, yet consistenly gets ranked much higher

I still really like Carlos Gonzalez as a prospect.

I think someone like Harvey is more over-rated on the Cubs than Patterson, though I still like Harvey's potential.

Of course, if I had to name an over-hyped prospect on the Cubs, I'll choose Samardja at this juncture.

Harvey's production this past season placed him right about where he should be in terms of hype, imo. He did not put up good numbers beyond his power output, imo.

For the Cubs, it has to be Pie (with good reason). Granted, he could probably play CF right now and be a decent 7/8 hitter and a good fielder, he's still getting those Vlad Guerrero and Carlos Beltran comps that simply do not fit. The guy still hasn't reached his potential yet, but people are making these comparisons anyways, which I think might hurt expectations for him (remember Corey?).

As for in the minors overall, I'll go with Jose Tabata. Yankees fans are about ready to crown the guy the second coming at the rate things are going.

Despite that, he's getting rated pretty highly in a lot of places.

Good point. Forgot about Samardzija

If the Cubs did have an overrated prospect it would have to be either Dopirak or Harvey.

Most overrated prospect in baseball imo is: Eric Duncan.

early candidate for worst post of the year

Most overrated: Tyler Colvin. Wow, a .313 OBP in rookie ball after 3 years of top-level D-One competition? Color me unimpressed. He was not that great his frosh or soph years, so really all he has is one really strong college season. I'd like to see more out of a college guy drafted in the top half of round one.

By the way, here is a list of Most Overrated Players before the 2006 season. I especially enjoy the inclusion of the NL MVP.

boy, they really were right on about soriano & howard. they even managed a dig at the 2006 AL MVP. what a great judge of talent they are. hopefully they'll put a few cubs on the 2007 list when it comes out.

the rationale for howard was just awful... this cracks me up though:

If you take Howard early, I wish you the best of luck.

I got Howard in like the 5th or 6th round of my draft, best pick I ever made in Fantasy Baseball thus far....

Wait scratch that, taking Beltran back in '04 was a good move...

As for the topic, in the Cubs farm system I'm not too keen on Samardzija yet. He played a handful of games last year as a prospect and people treat him like he's going to be the next big thing.

In the minors... Phillip Hughes... I don't think he's bad, per se, but people treat HIM like he already IS the next big thing, and he's only played about 1 1/2 seasons worth in the minors and hasn't even made it to AAA yet. I'm not doubting his talent, he's got it and I'd love for the Cubs to have it, but he get's so much hype based on one full minor league season, mainly because he's on the Yankees and the media brown noses them. If you're ready to start huffing the dong of someone based on 1 to 1 1/2 good minor league seasons, then Dopirak should've gotten this same treatment by the mass media back in 2004

Dopirak was at low-A during his big season, Hughes was at AA. I really like Hughes, I think his biggest concern is staying healthy (duh for a pitcher). I think he deservest he hype.

I think all good prospects deserve hype, but the media is making him the poster child of the minor league system. Maybe it's just that I don't put a lot of faith in pitching prospects because of the injury factor. That plus they're young and you never know what you'll get.

Example: Felix Hernandez. So overhyped and considered to be the best pitching prospect in baseball and he's been nothing but mediocre since he's been up

84.1 IP in 2005 suggest otherwise. He was also, imo, rather unlucky last year.

Cubs most overhyped? Mark Pawelek. High school pitchers are a lousy high 1st round pick, Pawelek is just another example of that. He has some talent obviously, he COULD become a genuine prospect, but right now color me unimpressed.

For those that mention Dopirak and Harvey, please....You need to have a legitimate upside to be considered a prospect. No one outside of the Cubs fan sites thinks anything of either one's future.

And Samardzija, too little information to say whether he is overhyped...or maybe underhyped. Let's hope the latter.

Baseball America was really down on Pawalek this year, and judging by his ranking the Cubs might be too.

I suspect Pawelek is going to end up being underrated going into this season and will surprise.

agreed. i think colvin will also be in this catagory.

Colvin will be underrated by who?

BA loves the kid.

Yeah, after complaining that he was a "reach" in the first round. They rated him 170 out of 200 prospects going into the draft. Dude's are going to eat some crow in the coming years.

They also rated him the number one prospect in the northwest league and gushed about his "tantalizing package of five average of better tools"

I don't understand why you seem to take Colvin's draft ranking so personally. And I also don't understand why you are so sure that Colvin will excel. It is impossible to be sure that a player who has played no higher than short season A ball will do anything.

It's just lame hearing BA rag on a draft pick and then a handfull of ABs later they change their tune. Same guy. Same skillset and makeup. Different day. Gotta love the bandwagon action over at BA. I'm sure they'll hop off if he struggles and be right back on after he adjusts.

How do I know Colvin will do anything? Wilken's 1st round draft record, that's how. You can't get much better. 95% of his 1st round picks make the bigs.

Just like BA hopped off Dopirak and Harvey's bandwagons after multiple struggling seasons? Oh wait.

BA is one of the last to ever hop off a bandwagon. They admitted they made a mistake in rating Colvin before the draft (as did just about everyone else).
