I just want to see somebody come in here and argue it's a good signing for the Sox.

At least they won't be using him as a first baseman.

The only thing I would say is, KW has this history of signing guys like this and having them become decent contributors.

Like who?

Esteban Loaiza comes to mind.

Pods was good the WS year. Uribe was steady that season, at least defensively. Marginal players that worked out good for a year. Rowand dropped off after he left the South Side.

KW finds a few guys. I don't know if Erstad is one of them though. I hope not.

ok. you win. erstad is bad because you say he is. he is guaranteed to have a bad season and be a complete waste of payroll. even if he hits .280 with a .745 ops he'll be horrible because he didnt reach .750. unless a player wins the gold glove and silver slugger they are just bad players with no chance to contribute.

Dude, Erstad isn't bad because I say he's bad, he's bad because he isn't very good at baseball. If he hits .280 I'll be stunned, because he's done that twice in the last 6 seasons. If he OPS's .750 I'll be more stunned, because he's also only had an OPS above .700 twice in the last 6 seasons, and one of those 2 was a .702 OPS.

I don't think I need to explain why the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards are meaningless crap.

Again, do you have anything at all other than your dismissive tone to suggest Erstad isn't terrible? I'm still waiting.

Cue somebody completely missing the point and saying that anybody in the Major Leagues must be good at baseball because they're in the Major Leagues.

Huh?

Just poking fun at the people who like to respond that all Major Leaguers are obviously good at baseball because they've made it to the Majors...

I looked at Erstads numbers and he isnt very good. He was really good until 2001 and has been really bad since. I would think that the Sox have to have a outfielder in there system that would give them as much production as Erstad.

It's pretty hard to argue this signing makes little sense. I guess KW is trying to recapture old Erstad glory? That was like 2001-2002 though---ancient history. He doesn't need more "veteran leadership" on that club, or anything like that.

It's puzzling.

If Erstad works out, it'll be another of those so-called lucky KW signings.

edit: makes little sense..

He's on par with most 4th OF'ers who prim. position in CF, or basically the Pagans of the baseball world.

Better someone like Erstad than bringing up someone like Sweeney who could some more ABs at AAA.

Like most back-ups players, health of the starters and managerial decisions will factor more than the player's abilities. Unfort. (minus Dye) the White Sox have some questions in that OF beyond Erstad.

Like a Neifi Perez, his value is more geared towards a late defensive replacement (assuming he's healthy) either at 1B of the OF.
