If there any Piniella experts here I'd like to hear their predictions on how the Murt/Floyd situation plays out. Lou is largely an unknown factor to me but I'm guessing Floyd isn't getting $3M to start once or twice a week.

Isn't 1 year at 3M pretty typical for a veteran fourth outfielder and pinch hitter.

She mentions platooning with Murt. However, that seems like a dumb idea.

 

2006:

Floyd = .266 OBP-.342 SLG-.423, Murton = .295 OBP-.354 SLG-.426 vs rhp

 

And that is in almost the same amount of AB's

 

He was hurt for most of that. In '05 he hit .290/.382/.533 against righties. In '04 it was .269/.373/.512.

 

When healthy, he's a better bet to hit righties than Murton. But in order to keep him healthy, I think they know they can't play him too much. So Murton will still get his playing time.

 

This can be a productive outfield if we play our cards right.

I'm no Lou expert. But I'm going to guess they will do something like a 70/30 split. It might depend on how some guys play. If, as the season goes on, there is a perception that the Cubs biggest problem is lack of LH bats, Floyd will play more. If they think power is the biggest problem, and Murton isn't on pace for 25 HR, Floyd will play more. On the other hand, if Murton is rocking, the middle of the order is bopping and the team is winning, Floyd might stay as more of a bench guy who occasionally hits for Murton.

 

One thing that doesn't really mean much to me is whatever lip service they give to how much time people will get.

I'd like to see a Murton-Jones-Soriano (from left to right) outfield with Floyd being the 4th guy off the bench. That could be a very very productive group if Lou uses them correctly. However, if this means Jones/Murton are platooning I'm going to be mighty pissed.

As recently as last offseason, Floyd was considered one of the best left-handed hitters versus lefty pitchers, behind Barry Bonds.

 

Floyd hits Tom Glavine really well, for example.

 

He hasn't hit LHP well since 2003 though. I guess he'd be better than putting Jones out there against LHP, but I'm a fan of the more feasible, more productive, and more likely Jones/Theriot platoon with DeRosa moving to RF against LHP.

I have no problem with refraining from calling her Muskat, I just find it hard to believe that it is a bigger deal than openly taking the Lords name in vain.
