It still astounds me that Hendry found a taker for Neifi. He was a plainly awful player in the midst of a terrible season. How could professional baseball men not understand what casual fans could?

We're lucky that Hendry found a taker but what does that say about Hendry when that fool signed him to that contract in the first place? What a dimwit.

not only a taker, but one that was willing to give the cubs their best catching prospect for nefi. here is mlb.com's scounting report on chris robinson before he was drafted by the tigers:

"Sturdy, durable catcher's body. Stocky, broad shoulders. Barrell chest, strong lower half. Great opposite field power. Line drive stroke. Excellent, vocal leader that takes charge of the pitching staff. Exceptional make-up."

Not only is Neifi terrible, but he never gets hurt. Why, dear Lord, is is always the terrible players who never get hurt?!?

I wonder if the Tigers are just going to release Perez then if that's the way they feel.

Plus, if Baker is such a winner, why hasn't he been hired?

At least partially because he signed a two-year deal with ESPN.

I'm sure ESPN would release him from the contract if he had an offer to manage and he wanted to accept it.

It has to be pointed out that Neifi (career .675 ops and .609 for the Cubs in 2006) had an .450 ops for the Tigers, and went 0-10 in the playoffs. Even for Neifi, that was horrendous.

Neifi was reduced to being Ramon Santiago's backup. That's only slightly less embarrassing than getting released.

I'm still finding it hard to believe that this story is true.

Me too. I just can not imagine a manager saying this about a player and a player that may be playing for him this year.

What's so hard to believe? Did you listen to the audio provided by the radio station? The exchange in Amazing_Grace's sig actually happened.

I'm thinking there's a good chance Neifi will be released. I don't see him playing for the Tigers next year. I just hope Hendry doesn't pick him up.

Evidently if this is what Leyland is willing to say to the public. I just think it's kind of unprofessional of him to say this stuff though.

No I didn't. But what is so hard to believe is that a manager actually had the balls to say the truth about a bad player. I spent the past 3 years just hoping the Cubs would stop praising, playing and employing players like Neifi, never even thinking anybody would actually admit the guy sucked.

I'm a huge walk/OBP proponent, and want the Cubs to do better with regards to the walk, but I'm not asking for them to lead the league or anything. To me, a manager actually saying Neifi sucked is akin to Hendry going out and finding the most patient lineup he could find. It's the exact opposite of what I'd expect.

A little more detail into the interview

I transcribed that verbatim from the audio link. He says some other stuff where I put the ... but I had to leave some out because my sig is too long. Root for me to get a full-time job so I can buy premium :-P I guess it's possible the interview was a fake, but if it is, they did a very solid job of it.
