Infielder Jeff Keppinger was traded Wednesday to the Cincinnati Reds. In return, the Royals received Minor League pitcher Russ Haltiwanger.

Keppinger was designated for assignment by the Royals on Jan. 2.

Haltiwanger, 22, is a right-hander who pitched in Class A last season. He appeared in 40 games for Dayton in the Midwest League and was 0-4 with a 4.15 ERA. Finishing the season with Sarasota, he made one start in the Florida State League.

Poor Keppinger.

He was hitting the hell out of the ball for us at AA in '04. We sent him to the Mets with Kris Benson which allowed us to get Jose Batista back. (we also got Wigginton, and someone else but I can't remember who right now.)

He was playing very well for the Mets at their AAA in '04 and there was talk about him being brought up to take over second base. Then someone slid into his knee. Missed most of '05 if I remember correctly.

Maybe he'll get a break this year?

Matt Peterson.

What are your feelings about Pittsburgh this year, Jake? Bay, Bautista, Nady would make for a pretty good outfield. If they can get LaRoche somehow, the offense should be pretty good this year.
