and reached a new deal with the D'backs.

MLB.com - The D-backs have reached agreement on a two-year contract with Randy Johnson, leaving only a physical and a review of the left-hander's medical records standing in the way of him officially rejoining the team.

According to The Associated Press, the two-year deal is worth $26 million.

On Thursday, the D-backs and Yankees agreed on a trade that would send Johnson and $2 million to Arizona in exchange for reliever Luis Vizcaino and Minor Leaguers Ross Ohlendorf, Steven Jackson and Alberto Gonzalez.

Arizona officials talked with Johnson's agents on Sunday and tied up the complex financial aspects of the deal.

He's old, has a bad back, and hasn't been very good the past couple of years.
In other words, a typical Cubs acquisition.

Maybe a change in scenery and coaches would do him some good?

fountain of youth might help too.

A 43-year old pitcher with drastically declining strikeout rates who is coming off his worst year of his career would really bolster this rotation.

If he promised to grow back his mullet, we should make a move. With business in the front, party in the back returning, he'd be back in Cy Young form.

That's some serious ugly.

Unfortunately, yes.

Unfortunately, yes? Boy, are you guys stuck in the past. NCCubFan was just making a joke. Jokes are better when they are based in reality, so I didn't find it very funny, but you're actually agreeing with him.

I can't think of anyone acquired in the last three years probably longer that fits that description. Marquis wasn't good last year, but hes not old and doesn't have a bad back. Maddux was old, but wasn't bad or injured. I mean you've got to go back a long way to find a time when the typical Cub acquisition was even two of those three. Gary Gaetti? Dave Kingman?

I've got no problem being critical of our beloved team, but let's at least keep it real.

Nicely said. Sometimes the negativity is almost too much.

Yeah, I also happen to think the Cubs will go (-2)-164 next year.

Here's a better picture of Johnson.

A) he wants to go back closer to AZ, while Chicago is closer than NY, I don't think its close enough.

B)While his health and ability to throw come ST are real concerns, a cursory evaluation of his stats for recent years are extremely deceiving. Johnson's peripherals remain excellent (and not because of luck) and while his K rate has declined, it is still significantly above average. As a Yankee, ZiPS projects a 3.71 ERA, PECOTA projects a 3.52 ERA in 2007.

Yeah, I'm with nilo on this one. Johnson isn't coming to Chicago, but if he were I'd welcome him with open arms.

I think he'll stay with the Yankees simply because they won't get enough in return. I guess thats the consequence they face after getting him... but whats the consequence? I dont understand why they even want him gone. He's had 2 straight 17-win seasons with the Yankees.. Totalling 34 wins and 18 losses. He's also eaten up 200 innings each year despite his high ERA in 2006.

His 2006 season netted him 17 wins because he had hands-down the best offense in the game behind him.

As of now, they're rotation consists of Mussina, Pettitte, Wang, Johnson, and Pavano. It's a strong 1-3, but if they could net a decent #4 pitcher who isn't facing the injury risks and performance decline Johnson is, or if they feel that Jeff Karstens is ready to start full-time, all while getting rid of his $15M+ contract, it's a no-brainer on their part.

IF Johnson is healthy theres a very very good chance he will be the #1 pitcher in that rotation.

Nate Silver agrees.

Chicago has absolutely nothing to do with anything in this discussion.

I remember back in 2004 the White Sox wanted him around the deadline but he said he didnt want to come to Chicago.
