On the Cubs main page, it says. The Cubs at a press conference on Friday, the Cubs introduced Ted Lilly.

Anybody see that? There was no announcement before hand, or no sign as far as I could see that it was happening today. I'd like to see it, what time was it on today?

Who'se most likely to have the replay? Comcast shows 30 seconds of things, will cubs.com even host it? Hopefully it will later.

It is already online.

Yep I just came back to update the thread. There wasn't a "link" 10 minutes ago. But I was just clicking around the headline and weirdly enough the window just pop'd up. Watching it now.

He doesn't even show the back of the jersey. I want to know what number he is!

Seriously, thats why I just watched it. I don't even have sound.

Lilly will wear No. 30. He's worn No. 31 in his career, but he was told that number is going to be retired by the Cubs. There was no official word on Friday, but both Greg Maddux and Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins are notables who wore No. 31.

Here's hoping for a double-player jersey retirement ceremony for Maddux and Jenkins.

Retiring numbers for two different players is a little ridiculous, especially since Maddux's Cubs career on its own wasn't even close to worthy of a jersey retirement.

Retiring numbers is ridiculous enough.

Yankees did it for Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey (No. 8), although I guess "the Yankees did it" isn't much of an argument against being ridiculous.

I'm not against it, though. Fergie's credentials as a Cub aren't in question, and while I don't disagree that Maddux's career Cub numbers aren't jersey-retirement worthy, he won his 300th game and registered his 3,000th strikeout as a Cub, and I think that retiring his number at Wrigley would be a gesture of respect toward the overall career of one of baseball's all-time greats on the part of the Cubs organization.

To further the hijacking of the thread, I don't think the Cubs should retire Maddux's number. He's going to the HOF as a Brave, the bulk of his career highlights came as a Brave, and his career as a Cub does not adequately place him in the company of Santo, Sandberg, and Banks. I'd retire Sammy's number before Maddux's.

Agreed. There's no way the Cubs should retire Maddux's jersey. Also, Sammy was great as a Cub, but he'll always have that steroids stigma around him, so I doubt the Cubs would ever think about retiring his number either.

Elsewhere on the subject of new jersey numbers:

2 - Ryan Theriot (his 4th number as a Cub; 55, 3, 7 and 2)

7 - Mark DeRosa

17 - Felix Pie (likely the number he'll wear if he makes his debut this season)

27 - Buck Coats

30 - Ted Lilly

32 - Daryle Ward

48 - Neal Cotts

57 - Rocky Cherry

55 - Clay Rapada

Why do you say that? I would guess #20, but that's just me.

Jae Kuk Ryu is still listed as wearing No. 20. Subject to change at any time, certainly, but No. 20 Ryu and No. 17 Pie is what the roster says at present.

Looks like they assigned those numbers when they updated the 40-man roster, because Pie was still # 68 two days ago.

Edit: How has this thread managed to stay in Transactions this long? :P

Yeah, I saw that too. Pie shouldn't be #17, that was only good for Gracie. (Bobby Hill sucked in it.) I believe he wears #22? in the minors, but in the winter leagues he wore #20 from pictures I've seen.

According to Minor League Baseball's site, he wore No. 20 at Iowa and is currently wearing No. 58 for the Tigres del Licey (Licey Tigers) of the Dominican Wnter League.

Still no word on Marquis number eh?

The Cubs don't appear to have made the signing official yet. Once they do, even, unless Marquis gets an introductory press conference, it could be some time until Marquis gets a number, as the Cubs.com roster is updated sporadically during the offseason.

In his time in the minors, he's worn #15 and #20.

The Cubs better retire Sammy's number!!

The Cubs should retire #21 before #31.
