It's believed the Marlins have talked to the Giants about Benitez. However, they'd need San Francisco to pick up the majority of the $7.6 million he's owed in order to take him on. The Giants seem less likely to do that since they've been unable to find a closer elsewhere.>>

I read this and it sparked an idea. What if the Cubs get involved in a deal with SF and Florida.

-The Cubs trade Dempster and cash to Florida

-SF trades Benitez and cash to Florida for Dempster

-Florida ships prospects to Chicago

The Cubs will have enough relief pitching without Dempster. I don't dislike him, but I believe in this market he could be an asset -in a trade.

Another asset and could possibly be included in this deal perhaps is Jones - to SF of course.

Jones is too young to play in SF. You need an AARP card to be a Giant.

I'd be all for it. The biggest hangup would probably be the money, as your scenario still has the Giants sending cash to Florida, and budget is an issue for SF right now.

Cubs get: Baldelli or Crawford + Reid Brignac (ss prospect)

Giants get: Jones, Dempster, $6mil from Cubs

Marlins get: Benitez, Scott Moore, Giants prospect + $6mil from Giants

D-Rays get: Cedeno + Nolasco + Marlins pitching prospects

fair? Just trying to get a centerfielder outta the deal.

Jones, Dempster, Moore, Cedeno and 6 mil might not be enough to get Baldelli, Crawford, or Brignac (who is easily one of the top 2-3 SS prospects)

I was thinking the same thing. It might take one of Gallagher/ Veal/ Pawalek in addition, especially if we are getting Crawford in return.

Nolasco should be the closer for the Marlins.

He's too valuable as a starter to be converted to closer.

I think I read somewhere that they were considering doing just that.

On the Marlins it might actually make a bit of sense.

Willis

Johnson

Sanchez

Olson

And Pinto and Petit can compete for the fifth starter spot with Mitre.

I'm not saying I'd waste a pitcher of Nolasco's potential in a relief role... that'd just be stupid. But if they can't get good value for him in a trade, they've got to put him somewhere... and there's a good chance Pinto or Petit (if he gets some of that magic back) could outperform him anyways.

Instead of working this deal, I'd rather trade w/ Boston.......... who is also looking for a closer.

I'd do:

Cubs trade:

JJones

Dempster

Eyre

Marshall

Mateo

Guzman

Boston trade:

Manny Ramirez

Have Pie play CF, Soriano in RF, Manny in LF and we wouldn't need to upgrade SS.

Ok, I'm dreaming, I know!

I've read he might not have a spot in their rotation.

I would rather the Cubs try Dempster as a starter and let him fail at that first before dealing him - unless the deal gives the Cubs a needed player. I think Dempster will bounce back.

I wonder how available Jeremy Hermida might be. He could be the lefty we covet to play CF. He displayed tremendous patience in the minors and is about to turn 23. I assume the Marlins still like him a lot, but we could obviously significantly sweeten the Benitez pot to make it a possibility.

I doubt Hermida goes anywhere anytime soon, unless Florida is overwhelmed with an offer.

Well, they know how well our pitching prospects work out for them! And we could provde Jacque, who will provide decent production in RF for cheap (with us picking up some of his salary).
