The offseason far for the cubs has been one of dollar amounds. Large ones. So far they have been racking up years, and millions of dollars to go with them. Whether or not those players that come with those contracts get us to the promised land remains to be seen.

The Offseason so far:

Nov 9 - Signed Wade Miller to 1 year/1 million dollar contract

Nov 12 - Extended Aramis Ramirez to 5 year/73 million dollar contract

Nov 14 - Signed Mark Derosa to 3 year/13 million dollar contract

Nov 15 - Resigned Henry Blanco to 2 year/5.25 million dollar contract

Nov 16 - Traded John Aardsma to White Sox for Neal Cotts

Nov 20 - Signed Alfonso Soriano to 8 year/136 million dollar contract

Dec 6 - Traded Freddie Bynum to Baltimore for PTBNL

Dec 6 - Signed Ted Lilly to 4 year/40 million dollar contract

Dec 7 - Signed Daryle Ward to 1 year/1.05 million dollar contract

Right now we sit at an estimated a 105 million dollars (pending Lilly's rumored backloaded contract, could be around 2-3 mil less), with around 15 mil left to work with (maybe 20 mil if we are looking to go after Zito, or take on a huge contract like Manny Ramirez).

This offseason, for the most part, has been scripted according to reports of what Hendry has said. He said he wouldn't be outbid by anyone for Soriano, he wasn't. He extended Ramirez like he said he wouuld (and slaved over for), and got one of the pitchers he was rumored to be after in Lilly.

So if the past (the recent past anyway) is in indicative of the future, here is that path Hendry is looking to go on.

1. Sign cheap option for back end starter (Jason Marquis)

or

find suitor for Jacque Jones and trade him for a starter (Jennings, Westbrook, etc..)

2. Trade for left handed OF

or

Sign Cliff Floyd (he might end up doing both)

3. Sign or trade for speedy IF backup

4. Extend Zambrano

I don't think much else will happen, but we as cubs fans do have room to optimistic, because of the stupidity of the Los Angeles Dodgers GM Colleti.

The Dodgers have been loading up on OF's this offseason, and STILL hope to add another one in Vernon Wells. Right now theyre going to have an ENTIRELY new OF with Wells, Pierre, and Gonzalez,.

The weaknesses for the Blue Jays at the moment are power hitting, and bullpen. They hope to acquire Wells to help with the latter, but they still are lacking with the former.

This is where the cubs come in.

Scott Eyre, Bob Howry, and Michael Wuertz are attractive options for any bullpen defficient team, and the Dodgers should jump at the chance to acquire them.

A 3 Team Deal:

Toronto Gets: Penny, Jones, Marshall, and Tomko

Cubs get: Ethier, and Betemit

Dodgers get: Wells, and Eyre

Or something along those lines. That would quench Hendry's want for a left handed CF, and a backup IF. Toronto should be happy with that deal as they get the big time SP that they want, and a OF coming off a pretty good year as well as another young SP, and bullpen help. The Dodgers will love this deal.

That is the pipedream.

For a ex-decent prospect? Jones has more value than that. I know if I were the GM I would try to get the best available player for Jones. I wouldn't trade Jacque to trade Jacque.

Lofton SHOULD NOT be considered an every day player. And no way in hell would I pay him 6 million. If he is willing to take 2 million then I would consider it.

I'm not saying that the trade is going to be the rest of his offseason, im saying its an optimistic avenue that Hendry could pursue if he is creative enough. He'd probably end up signing Marquis (if he already hasn't).

you know, this has been refuted. Hendry never said that or expressed anything but a willingness to make a trade to improve the team, but you keep going to that well repeatedly.

Hendry's made enough mistakes. you don't need to make crap up or keep throwing out some unnamed source in an unattributed article to bash him.

Agreed.

Even if the commissioner's office was forcing me to trade Jacque to the Orioles for a violation of some obscure rule, I'd rather take nothing back in return than to take Newhan.

Keep jaque for CF,

Sign Suppan to stabalize the rotation.

use rookies like theroit/moore types to fill out the bench.

it pains me to say this but im thinking its pretty realistic to believe that we will make only 2 more moves....jason marquis and kenny lofton. marguis had a 6.00+ ERA last year. lofton ive always loved but he is 39 years old. i really cant make any predictions on how we'll do in 2007 but i fully expect prior, wood, and wade miller to be inactive for the entire year. i do believe lee will be healthy. i think our offensive will improve but not be great and i think our pitching will struggle mightily.

I don't agree with that, but we are all entiled to our opinions. Because Wade Miller made several starts at the end of the season, and did QUITE GOOD, even with lower velocity. For that, I beleive he showed he was actually rehabbing, and getting better. Therefore I think he will make a good amount of starts next year. I really look foward to him contributing in some way. I also disagree that our offense won't be great. For 1 derrek Lee will be back, Aram is entering his prime, and we now have 3 big bats, not just 2.

There's absolutely no way Hendry is done by signing Marquis and Lofton.

Jacque wants out and Hendry will likely accomodate him.

The pen is overflowing with arms. There's no way they come to ST with:

Dempster

Wood

Eyre

Howry

Wuertz

Ohman

Cotts

Novoa

all on the roster.

I think Jacque gets packaged with a reliever for a starting pitcher.

One or two of the kids (Marshall, Mateo, Marmol, Guzman) will get traded for an outfielder.

No way do I trade Jones just because his whiny butt wants out. If we don't get decent value in return he is my CF at least until we can make a deal at midseason. Just because he wants to be traded is no reason to accomodate him if it hurts the team.

The Cubs will get a fair offer for him. There's no reason not to. He's making reasonable money for decent production, even if all of his production comes against RHP.

i hope your right. i do think of the 3 (miller, prior, wood) that wade has the best chance of remaining healthy. as far as Aramis entering his prime...YOUR RIGHT MY FRIEND!! Aramis is a flat out stud. im thinking he tops 120 RBIs this year. if Lee stays healthy, it will give us 3 solid bats with the addition of Soriano. again, im not ready to say we'll be great offensively though.

im hoping to hell Hendry doesnt ink Marquis. im also in the camp that doesnt think Jock should be traded unless we get somebody relatively decent. anyway i look at it, even as we stand now we're a better team than last year. but as we stand now im not ready to predict playoffs.

i some of the more positive people around here are right.
