third worst deal of the offseason behind pierre and meche.

I think the Lilly deal is worse.

This deal kind of makes me sick because what we are paying Lilly and Marquis combined could have gone towards the salary of Carlos Beltran way back when.

Oh well.

But we already had CF set for years with CP.

Posted

We were outbid for Beltran.

It's not like Hendry said, "well, we were outbid, so now I can focus my attention on signing Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis in 3 years."

It just doesn't work that way.

This is an ok signing. Marquis is a lot better than his numbers last season indicate.

I'd expect 180+ IP, 4.25 ERA with some decent offense for a pitcher. That extra offense will come in handy with Soriano batting leadoff.

That's about best-case scenario.

Obviously i understand that, its just that it looks like now that if MacPhail had been ousted 3 years ago, Hendry could have gone all out and spend the kind of money necessary to fetch Beltran. I would have felt more comfortable giving him 8/136 than Soriano.

I think Goony was on the right track. Hendry is "stockpiling" pitchers. What does eveyone need? Pitching. Lets not forget the Cotts trade. Hendry may be planning a big move soon. Who knows?

What would it take to get Manny?

What would it take to get ARod?

What would it take to get Cabrera?

I think you should give credit where it is due if you agree with that assessment.

except hendry is stockpiling crappy pitchers...nobody that's going to help land arod.

my post was a wise crack based on me being the one who suggested a trade is inevitable with the stockpile of pitchers. it had nothing to do with Hendry.

Fixed.

At first when I heard about Marquis, I was pissed. I still am not happy because there are better options out there, but if Prior and Hill turn out good we'd have a pretty good rotation with two pitchers hitting in the 8 slot. Hopefully by not trading away young arms Hendry will trade bullpen/prospects for another big bat. If he can do this, can sign a power pinch hitter, and the Astros and Cardinals don't improve too much, we should be favorites in the division.

ah, so best case scenerio is significantly worse than what he did three seasons ago and slightly worse than what he did two seasons ago.

again, you don't need to make things up to bash the signing.

Best case scenario is that some legal-minded individual files a case contesting the contract on the grounds that Hendry is not of sound mind or body.

Some of Hendrys singings like this one arent the greatest..But damn, Im excited for the '07 season..To see all these new faces in Cubs uniforms and just curious to see how they do...Hopelly Derosa can remain a .300 hitter and become an awsome #2, hopefully Marquis can pitch like he did in '04,Soriano 40/40 again..Havent been this pumped since going into the '04 season since there was such high expectations that year..

Isn't it a lot more realistically going to look like this:

Zambrano

Lilly

Marquis

Hill

Prior/Miller/Guzman/Marshall et al.

I just can't see the lefties being set back to back.

#1, #2, etc. are states of being, not the order in which they go through the rotation.

On the bright side, since we didn't get a major FA pitcher, maybe Z will get locked up to a long term deal before the season starts.

another tangential effect of this and the Lilly deal is it allows the Cubs to trade away some minor league pitching without worrying about the depth chart. A trade or two before April is inevitable.

Good point. Nice issue spotting counselor.

I've been wondering if Hendry is going to surprise everybody with a trade of Rich Hill at his high point. You might be able to get a serious offensive upgrade if you're willing to part with him in a package. This is when I'd try and overwhelm Florida with all the prospects they want for Cabrera, or you offer to restock the Yankees farm team with just about anybody for ARod. The Cubs aren't going to win many 2-1 games with this staff, they need to rack up the runs.

The Cubs are going to have to play a rope a dope game this season, lulling the opponent to sleep with the incredibly boring pitching staff. 3/20 doesn't reak of terrible. Marquis does have a chance to have a good year, and if he does, and some internal options figure things out, he'd make great trade bait next season. Well, here's to Larry working some magic on the guy and getting something out of Marquis.

Actually I was going from Goonys post here. As I stated before jjgman21.

then why didn't you say "I think Goony was on the right track. Hendry is going to trade Hill."

whatever man. it was a joke. getting credit for being first to post an obvious idea really doens't mean that much to me.

I was just elaberating on what Goony said abou ARod or Cabrera. However, in all fairness, you do get credit for the original idea. No hard feelings?

I'll take Marquis 3/20 any day over Meche 4/40

Why does it have to be either? They're both bad options IMO. I'd rather have Guzman, Marshall, Mateo, Marmol, etc. battle it out.

I think I need to take about a week or two off after this one. I'm not happy. Hope I'm wrong.

I'm probably the only one, but I don't mind the 3/20 compared to several other contracts that have been given out this year. Marquis has more risk than Lilly but his upside would be about the same and is much cheaper. I really think this might turn out to be a case of buying low on someone after a down year instead of overpaying for someone after having a career year like Soriano and Derosa. Lilly and Marquis have similar numbers over the last few years and would not be surprised if Marquis has a solid but unspectacular year next year.

Yet another horrible deal by Hendry.

He's so dedicated to destroying this franchise to MAYBE save his job.
