does anyone else think we have now pissed away a possibly stellar offseason?

really..less than a week ago we were talkning about getting schmidt-lilly and jennings....with meche thrown in as a possiblity

we were set to get another big bat...

now we get lilly but not schmidt or meche. jennings is supposedly untouchable, garcia went to the phils for prospects

we are talkning about ward as the big bat...ward who has no place to play

and we are talking about gambling on marquis to help save our staff...might as well go back to hoping wood and prior will be studs

we are better but how much? we still look to have serious holes on offense and pitching. we are aslo back to hoping for career years from derosa, marquis, jones again. lilly...etc

Wow. There's 2 months left yet, nobody's said Ward is the "big bat", Jennings is not untouchable, Garcia would never, ever have been traded by Williams to the Cubs.

who is out there? floyd? i like him but he can't play fulltime.

trades?...i simply do not see anyone that is a big bat available.

there is talk that wells may be moved for pitching but what major league ready pitching would we send? hill- then that adds another hole on our staff.

there's always a chance but i have a hard time buying the old...trade players a,b,c for this bat and then trade players d,e,f for this pitcher....

just too many scenarios to feel confident we can get them.

I agree with the sentiment of your post, but I don't like the "2 months left" train of thought. It seems like every offseason we hear about how much more time Hendry has left, and he never finishes the job. I'd say he only has maybe a month before the real work has to be done. I don't think you can be waiting around to late January to be thinking of making extremely important moves.

He hasn't been waiting around though, goons. He's been driving himself into the ground working.

I'm not saying he is waiting around. I'm just saying he really doesn't have 2 months left. He's got to make this team better in the next month, or this is pretty much what we'll have.

It's MLBbushleaguerumors. I don't trust it. And if we signed Marquis, that is one AWFUL deal.

honestly, I could give a rat's crap about how much these guys get paid anymore. The salaries are off the charts. It's not my money. I only care about if they'll be good or not. Clearly it's a player's market. Also, if this trend continues, $8mil/year will seem like nothing in 2 years.

Rome wasn't built in a day. This team was AWFUL last year, and at the very least, they're in a position to be considerably better than they were last year. Yeah, they could throw lots of money at every free agent out there and then block every prospect in the pipeline and guarantee that they'll be cash-strapped in future offseasons. I'd prefer that the Cubs improve some and start moving toward where they're trying to get, that to go crazy right off the bat.

Despite the craziness, this issue should matter to fans. Too many ridiculous deals leads to an unhealthy situation down the road (see the Orioles). Unless we are guaranteed that payroll will continue to rise steadily and be far higher than most teams, we should hope the Cubs avoid the bad deals.

A bad highly paid player can do two things to hurt the team:

A) He can play poorly and keep getting playing time either because the manager feels he should player the expensive guy or the GM forces the manager to play the guy.

B) He could force the team to not be able to improve in other areas by tying up money.

You should mind if this is a 3/30m or 1/2.5m type deal.

I think you can't judge that until the end of the deal though. We have no idea how well/poorly Marquis might pitch for the Cubs, so fretting about the dollars up front is just unneeded stress. Of course you don't want your GM digging you into a financial hole (cough*Marlins*cough) but I'd rather criticize a signing based on on field production than dollars and years

I just checked with a source of mine. He's hearing that the rumored deal on the table to Marquis is for 1 year and $4M in 2007 with an $8M vesting team option or $1M buyout in 2008. He has no clue on the vesting clause criteria, but he's guessing some quantity of innings pitched.

Aren't vesting option criteria pretty limited? Mostly based on playing time (starts, IP, PA's, etc.)? Can't be based on statistics, right?

That I could easily live with...(although maybe that's because I have been dreading the idea of 3/27).

So it's true that we've signed him?

If its indeed true I too can live with that contract and I didn't want Marquis here to begin with.

Not to his knowledge. He called it a deal on the table, not an agreed to deal.

Does he have any other insight as to what other players we are looking to sign or trade for? Thanks Hoops.

This sounds far more reasonable than that stupid 3/$27M thing being thrown around. Where did that come from, anyway? Even in an insane market like this, a guy with a 6+ ERA last year is not going to get that sort of money. That's the sort of deal where you can give him a shot, and dump him easily if he pitches like he did last year.

Thanks you just jinxed us. Now I'm fully expecting a 3/27 for Marquis :)
