It appears Maddux is close to signing with the Padres according to FOXSports.

The Padres are closing in on a major off-season coup, nearing an agreement with free-agent right-hander Greg Maddux, FOXSports.com has learned.

The deal, which would be a significant blow to the Dodgers, the Padres' NL West rival, will be for either one or two years, or possibly one year with a club option.

I think given the parks and the weather between the teams, a pitcher like Maddux still holds semi-decent value for them. It's a coup in that it looks like the Dodgers were planning/hoping/counting on re-singing him and he's being snagged by a rival team instead.

Oh well. I was really hoping to see Mad Dog part III in Cubbie blue for 1-2 more years.

You don't mean that.

even in that respect it looks like a blessing in disguise for the Dodgers to me.

Greg will do well in Petco though.

I sincerely do mean that. I would rather pay Maddux 2 years and $18M than pay Ted Lilly 4 years and $40M.

a coup? whatever.

A coup is getting a gold-glove shortstop for an aging pitcher with an 82 mph fastball.

Viva la Hendry!

That is awsome! :D :D

Rosenthal is backing off his ascertion now that Maddux is going to the Padres by saying Boras is now shopping for a better deal.

The Padres are offering Maddux, 40, a one-year contract with a club option for 2008, according to a major-league source. Early Monday night, it appeared the team was near an agreement with the pitcher.

However, representatives for Boras told officials from other clubs later Monday night that Maddux remained available. The Dodgers also are unwilling to give Maddux a second guaranteed year, sources say.

A decision by Maddux is expected Tuesday; the Padres are believed to be his first choice, and the Dodgers are thought to be the only other club for which he would pitch.

LA Times[/url]"]Boras is seeking $21 million over two years, according to a source who spoke to him. The Dodgers have made a two-year offer, but for less than $20 million with the second year contingent on performance-based incentives.

...

Negotiations could be complicated by the strained relationship between Boras and Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti, who was livid when another Boras client, outfielder J.D. Drew, opted out of the last three years of his contract a few weeks ago.

Colletti, however, realizes that maintaining a professional relationship with Boras is important because he represents so many prominent players. Although Colletti would not say whether he plans to make a last-ditch effort to re-sign Maddux, two executives from other teams said they would be shocked if that didn't happen.

This opt out stuff is getting out of control. Why on Earth are GM's offering them up? And why on Earth do they get upset if the player/agent uses them?

This is giving the players too much leverage. Put an end to them before they really spin out of control.

Don't worry: Hendry can't read.
