I found a small mention of Prior trying to recruit Jason Schmidt on behalf of the Cubs in the Rocky Mountain News.

Link.

Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Mark Prior, an Arizona neighbor of Jason Schmidt is trying to persuade the free-agent right-hander to sign with the Cubs.

Schmidt, a native of Washington state, has ruled out East Coast teams because of his preference to stay in the West.

So Prior does serve a function on this team even when he can't pitch. He's a recruiter. Of course Mark is going to do what he can to make the team better, but it's still nice to see.

This might be the most productive thing Prior has done for the Cubs since 2003. The question is: can he succeed where Neifi failed? (convincing a premier free agent to sign with the Cubs/)

I know it's fun and all to make fun of Prior, but can we at least acknowledge that when he pitched, he pitched well in both 2004 and 2005? Is it that hard? ERA+ of 113 and 116 in those years with 285 innings pitched is better than some names we've heard rumored to be in the Cubs rotation next year.

It's a good sign that Prior seems to be clearly committed to this team winning in 2007. With his injuries and the flak he catches from fans and the press, it would be very easy for him to be looking for a quick exit.

Hadn't heard anything about it. I wonder if Bruce Miles would like to discuss this.

I've heard Bruce isn't always right. Can this be confirmed or denied?

Seriously though, this is why new threads are good - check about page 40 Fergie . . . . and remember, you never have new news on NSBB.

Here's to Mark Prior. With all of the crap he's gotten in Chicago (mostly deserved, but some over the top from fans and media), he is still trying to help out the team. I thought he was just counting the days until he leaves here, but maybe he will want to stick around for the long haul. One more great season from him and the team can do wonders for wanting to play in this city and he knows it from 2003 and he's trying to get Schmidt to come along.

Or...being Schmidt's neighbor, he knows his arm is trash and is trying to screw the organization by saddling them with a long term contract.

I think its the former, so here's to you Mark Prior, Mr. I don't care if the fans think I'm a wimp, I'll still help the team and really will make the Hall of Fame Pitcher Guy

what did prior do to deserve crap again? Other than destroy his shoulder trying to get the Cubs to the world series in 2003?

Apologies! Missed that. I almost didn't post on the grounds that this news is at least 3 days old, but I didn't thoroughly read existing Schmidt threads.

Come on dude, he's obviously babying his "golden" arm so that he can make a bunch of money when he's a FA. Because the more he's out and the more his "golden" arm is preserved, the more value he has. Just look around, his value has sky-rocketed the last couple years!!!

Oh great.... Aramis has decided to opt out and test free agency...this is just what we need.

Yeah this coming on the heels of Steve Bartman ruining our chance to goto the World Series. Geez

just for fun i went to retrosheet to look at game 2 of the NLCS 2003. prior threw into the eighth inning after the cubs were up 11-0! You wonder if that could effect his stamina for his next start. maybe it did, i dont remember that game. thanks dusty

btw: it should be no surprise that pierre went 4-3 four times on his way to an 0-5 that game. i bet he hustled though.
